From Hideo Nakata, director of 'Ring', comes this brooding and unsettling masterpiece of horror cinema!

In the midst of a custody battle, Yoshimi and her beloved 6 year old daughter move in a creepy apartment. Once there, the discovery of a schoolbag left behind by a mysterious young girl, along with the appearance of damp patches on the ceiling and walls begins to haunt them as rumours circulate of a little girl who disappeared from the apartment above...

Watch this film with no lights and by yourself

I watched this film literally 3 minutes ago and thought it was fantastic, watched it on my laptop and its now 01:36am and it freaked me out big time, i love J-Horror's and this is a personal fave, very slow but as the review below said its seductive with a dark, gloomy creepy block of flats. The reviewer who gave this one star really must have no sense in a good movie, saying it was boring and waiting for something to happen, this isnt a typical horror movie, its a psychological movie, as it says on the case if you can read. a must buy for anyone who has liked the likes of the ring or the grudge. AAAAAAAAA

 brilliant! I loved it ^-^

I loved this film - it had me gripped onto the edge of my seat! The director Hideo Nakata did a great job of making this movie.
The film has a great build up and the suspense will keep you watching ^-^ (albeit from behind a cushion........) It has a really good storyline to it and it was so much better than some I have seen (apart from the RING....).
If you love these type of scary/supernatural films then I would definatly recommend this one so give it a watch and see what you think ^-^

...to full length film, I think the makers manages to create a fair piece of cinema from only a very short storyline originally. The ending is very different to the book and thus makes this film quite sad at the end rather than horrific.

Its got all you expect from these J-Horrors, surburbia, normal people and a creepy girl in need of a hair cut. What's good about Dark Water is the way they build up to a final horrific scene rather than throw them at you all the way through, done ideally to build suspence. I think parts of the original short story they missed out would have fitted in quite well to the film but there we go. Covers the relationship between mother and daughter well and shows the lengths a parent will go to to protect their child.

No, it's not full of sudden moments to make you jump (see Ju-On for that) but its a good atmospheric film...if you have the pateince to let your imagination do the horror for you.

 Boring

this film is so boring. i kept waiting for something to happen and it just didnt avoid this film unless you are scared of a damp patch on your ceiling which no one really is.

One of the few horror remakes where I was able to catch the original in a cinema rather than on DVD or TV etc, and even after 6 years I still remember how much it clawed at my nerves.

Hideo Nakata's water drenched dread-filled story works as an affecting character drama of a mother fighting for custody of her daughter and a tense, nerve-shredding terror ride that had me watching through fingers even though not a single drop of blood is ever seen. Not one drop!

The tragedy at the heart is so simple and yet so effective, and it's amazing that you can go from being terrified to feeling sadness in seconds, yet this film achieves that.

The 2005 US remake with Jennifer Connelly isn't the worst film ever made, but as usual, pales against this original.
