This is no ordinary soccer match: this is war!

The battlefield: a stadium in occupied Paris. The armies: German all-stars vs. ragtag Allied POWs. The objective: demonstrate another "proof" of Aryan superiority. Guess who wins? Better yet, guess who cleverly uses the match as a means of escape?

Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and Max von Sydow star in this rouser directed by the legendary John Huston. The climatic match is a heart-in-the-throat, hat-in-the-air exhibition of brute force and balletic grace featuring soccer legends Pele, Bobby Moore, Osvaldo Ardiles, Co Prins, Mike Summerbee and more.

Score a splendid entertainment goal for 'Victory'!

an escapism back to the 70s and 80s

Imagine Sly Stallone as a goalie- throw in legends like Pele, Ardiles, Moore and Van Himst; add the tale of POWs vs Germans and the spice of concocting an escape into Allied France.. Caine is superb; John Huston a famous director and a typical boys' comic book adventure and the ingredients for a very worthy watchable DVD. This did not win any awards but leaves some of the modern soccer films standing e g the awful Goal trilogy. Wonder if Sly Stallone will bring his goalie skills in his new film The Expendables- check Escape to Victory out!

Escape to Victory was mauld by critics on it's release way back in 1981, the so called critics could not figure out why a Direct in such high regard of classic as African Queen, The Maltese fFlcon and The Man Who Would Be Kind would Direct such a simple boys own adventure. Now almost thirty years after it's release the answere is simple, having such legends as Pele, Bobby Moore, Ozzy Ardiles, Co Prins, Mike Summerbee, Michael Caine and Stallone in Goal on the pictch at the same time is simple wish forfillment and a guilty viewing pleasure. The plot is simple, and the actual football legends acting is so wooden you can see splinters fly, but what do you expect they were payed to play a game and not act. The final game is brilliant fun and when Pele does his signature back flip goal, it's impossible not to cheer. Of course you can't compare it to Huston's classic's but it's a damn site better than the horrid Annie musical he directed afterwards. Escape to Victory is the perfect bank holiday movie or something to cheer yourself up with after Englands disappointment in the 2010 South African World Cup.
