Jack the Ripper is no stranger to popular culture. Arguably one of the greatest mysteries of all time, the speculation and ambiguity surrounding those harrowing events of 1888 allow for wild and wonderful speculation. "From Hell" is a film about a possible solution to the Ripper murders, involving an intricate and original conspiracy theory in its plot line, which even if fantastical makes for a gripping watch.
Depp is superb as Frederick Abberline, adding an element of the supernatural to the otherwise pretty historically accurate figure. I would not go so far as to call this film a Horror however, as despite the promising subject matter there are few suspense, or "jump" moments, and is more likely to affect those delicate of stomach than those with fragile nerves as some of the killers are brutally graphic.
Depp along with an all-star cast including Ian Holm, Heather Graham and Robbie Coltrane, along with the meticulous staging of the film manages to make the it believable, allowing for a few artistic licenses!
A good film, great plot line, easy to watch again and again and a must for all Depp fans!
