Irreversible has without doubt one of the most shocking and controversial scenes I have ever witnessed in the world of cinema.

The films events take place over the course of one vexing night in Paris told in a reverse chronological sequence as the completely striking Alex played by Monica Bellucci is brutally raped and beaten by a total stranger in an underpass after leaving a party early.

Her performance is both harrowing and heart felt and one that I don't think many other actresses could of participated in never lone surpass that's a credit to her acting credentials - Well Done!!!!

Upon finding out what has happened in the most coincident of fashions, her current and a previous partner decide to take the law into their own hands by becoming avenging angels and go on a chaotic search to unearth the vindictive and heartless rapist so that they can exact one of the most brutal of revenge ever witnessed in cinema.

This film proves that life is not always fun and pretty and you do not know what can be round the corner. Anyone can be a victim. People may state that the rape sequence is too graphic and goes on for far too long but my answer to them is this.

I very much doubt that something as strong a subject as 'RAPE' is meant to be a pleasant viewing experience.

It may seem that I am putting a constraint on this film but far from it. This film is without doubt a must see film for all film lovers, even those who may detest world cinema the fact is; is that Irreversible is a film that speaks louder than words. Easily Ten out of ten!!!!!!

i wasnt sure whether to give this a 1 star or 5 becasue the film is sick and twisted at first but then develops into a soft ending. its 2 scenes that makes this film very very disturbing. the film starts of with disorientation and the eery deep sound makes your stomach upset..but if you have a strong stomach and really want to be shocked then watch this. you can rent all the horror movie you want but nothing i have watched can top the feeling you get after watching this. it leaves you thinking about it for a long time. nothing else to say but you either gonna turn it of straight away or watch the whole thing and be very touched negatively or postively

i was very apprehensive about buying this after hearing about its two extremely violent scenes... but went ahead anyways :) i was blown away! the camera work was abnormally fantastic, the acting was too good, and the effects created... even better!!! this film holds no boundries. it feels real due to the gritty effects and the sense of chlostrophoebia and confusion only make this movie a masterpiece... enough said :)

The film starts very dark and ends exactly the same... As said by other reviews two scenes are extremely uncomfortable for their shocking nature, but the entire experience of the film is breath taking.

Watch it but be prepared to be shocked!

A friend pointed me towards this movie. It was a strange experience watching it and I found myself uncomfortable at many parts. But its just the sheer artisticness of the way its filmed. The camera work is so good it makes you feel like you actually their in the moment and not watching it.

The story is a very gritty dark story which I won't.

You must see it, even if it does feel a little wrong

This film is fantastic, it introduced me to World Cinema. This film proves that Hollywood is far to commercial, don't get me wrong I love the respectable Hollywood films but this film really opens your mind to film making. WOW!!

Beginning with it's final credits, Gasper Noe's 2002 twisted corkscrew of a revenge movie feels like one long drawn out tracking shot from the very pits of Hell itself. Following the path of time in a backwards order it muses on the subjects of both fate and human fragility and features two of the most shockingly powerful scenes I have witnessed in modern cinema. In the first the breathtakingly beautiful Monica Bellucci is assaulted for eight minutes in a dank, shadow infested underpass - Noe's previously restless camera work remaining still and lifeless on the floor nearby watching the whole sordid, unpleasant act unfold. The other scene comes later in the narrative but, due to the nature of the films chronology, earlier in the film and features a brutally, violent death by fire extinguisher. Deep in the very bowels of a seedy nightclub we witness a mans head smashed repeatedly until his face literally disintegrates in front of our eyes. No forewarning helps either, no descriptions of the two scenes here can fully ready the viewer for the stunning impact these two scenes have. Certainly not an 'enjoyable' film, it's debatable whether this stomach-churning, chronologically skewed tale is one you'll want to watch over again but the simple fact remains this is stunning cinema. A fantastically shot, acted and produced masterpiece of moviemaking that is sure to elicit a response from everyone who watches it. Time does, indeed, destroy everything. Unmissable....
