'Mommie Dearest' is the outrageous and controversial story of legendary movie star Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway) and her struggle with the dual roles of fading actress and tormented mother. The public Crawford was strong-willed, glamorous and admirable, but Mommie Dearest reveals the private Crawford, the woman desperate to be a mother, adopting her children when she was single and trying to survive in the movie industry. The rage, the debilitating strain, and the terrifying descent into alcoholism and child abuse are graphically and unforgettably depicted in this film.

Mommie Dearest is probably one of the fabulous Faye Dunaways finest performances. Dunnaway portrays movie icon Joan Crawford in this emotional rollercoaster which will have you gripped. It shows just what lengths a hollywood star would go to, just to be famous and loved. It can be a little evoking and upsetting at times especially the scenes in which Crawford physically and mentally abuses her adopted children. One of the these scenes is when Crawford is fired by Metro Golden Mayer and she awakes the children and in a 'frenzy' chops all the roses and plants in the garden making the childern clear them up thorns and all. The film is filled with the glamour and high life of 50s and 60s hollywood and shows what work, stars had to do to survive in this environment. Dunnaway is at her best and at times you forget its really her.
Faye dunnaway should of received an Academy Award for her true to life portrayal of a modern day icon- FABULOUS.
