In Peter Weir's Master And Commander, Russell Crowe stars as Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey, renowned as a fighting captain in the British Navy. After a French ship almost sinks them in a battle, the ship's surgeon and Aubrey's closest friend Stephen Maturin (Paul Bettany) cautions him about letting revenge cloud his judgement. With the HMS Surprise badly damaged and much of his crew injured, Aubrey is torn between duty and friendship as he pursues a high-stakes chase across two oceans to intercept and capture his foe, refusing to accept defeat at the hands of the French at any cost.

Master and Commander is based on the series of books, and the film is a spellbinding history lesson.
Russell Crowe gives one of his most commanding performances so far.
Director Peter Weir brings the Britsh Navy of the early 19th century to life with the on board antics and battles of the crew Crowe commands. Paul Betterny also shines as the ships doctor and naturist. Don't go thinking your going to see an ocean bound version of Gladiator, as the film offers more in the way of living on the ship and out smarting the French Navy ( not that hard , as usually they run away from any conflict), but it's the day to day running of the ship that fascinates as everybody is skilled and how they set about their daily task is amazing and edjucainional viewing. But if you want ship on ship action the film does really deliver, and the DTS soundtrack is jaw dropping as you let the surround sound put you in the action, as you really feel the cannon balls whizz past you in the fantastic rear to front surrond sound. The only down side is that the film was realeased in 2003, so why have we not had a sequel?, it's so wrong, as Hollywood drones out sequels to films that don't deserve them, but this modern classic gets forgotten about, as no doubt there are many people who would love to take another ocean bound adventure with Russell crowe and his crew.
Master and Commander is, and always will be a mordern classic!
