Sometimes stopping is the most important part of the journey...
Marc Evans directs a script by Angela Pell, co-produced by Henry Normal and Steve Coogan's Baby Cow.
Alex (Alan Rickman) is a quiet, brooding man struggling to come to terms with the death of a hitchhiker killed in his car in a brutal crash. In the aftermath of this harrowing ordeal, he comes to stay in a small Canadian town with Linda (Sigourney Weaver), a highly functioning autistic woman whose life has also been touched by tragedy. As they each attempt to deal with their losses in their own distinct ways, Alan strikes up a relationship with Maggie (Carrie-Anne Moss) and finds himself experiencing long-buried depths of emotion.
Snow Cake was chosen to open the 2006 Berlin Film Festival, with the director, Marc Evans, receiving a nomination for the Golden Bear.

I first watched this one evening as a last resort. I wasn't particularly interested and had never heard of the movie. After about 5 minutes, I was hooked and glued to the screen until it finished. I'm normally an action movie type fan-but this was something else. The story is very well done but I believe it's the acting which is superb from both Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman that makes the film so great. The lack of 'special effects' is a breath of fresh air.
What more can I say.. It's a master piece.
Sigourney never fails to deliver

Snow Cake is a moving tale of tragedy, loss, guilt, and grief. It is also a hugely life-affirming celebration of difference. Sigourney Weaver's portrayal of an autistic single mother is by turns mesmerising and hilarious. As to its authenticity - well I'm not qualified to judge but it has apparently been endorsed by many people who are. Alan Rickman is as effective as ever as the guilt-stricken pilgrim who enters her life by way of a tragic accident and is transformed as a result of knowing her. And the snowy Canadian early spring thaw provides a marvelously sparse and chilly analogue to this odd couple's brief but cathartic encounter.
On the down side, this is a somewhat manipulative movie, and is arguably a little predictable, but these faults are easily outweighed by the film's genuine warmth.
