Academy Award winner George Clooney stars in the title role of this suspense thriller. As an assassin, Jack (played by Mr. Clooney) is constantly on the move and always alone. After a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, Jack retreats to the Italian countryside. He relishes being away from death for a spell as he holes up in a small medieval town.

While there, Jack takes an assignment to construct a weapon for a mysterious contact, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten). Savoring the peaceful quietude he finds in the mountains of Abruzzo, Jack accepts the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and pursues a torrid liaison with a beautiful woman, Clara (Violante Placido). Jack and Clara's time together evolves into a romance, one seemingly free of danger. But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.

 Outstanding!

Outstanding character driven drama, Clooney really showing what a great actor he's become. Slow moving, absorbing, very much a European film, this is certainly not another Jason Bourne (and I'll be amazed if it makes any money in the US). Brilliantly made with Italy never looking better, this is a film to tax your brain and tug at the senses! Highly recommended.

ok its not full of shootouts every few minutes but this is a cracking film, clooney plays a hitman at the end of his career , a last job takes him to a small town in the italian countryside, the film idles along at a pace we would all love to take thru life, clooneys character finds love with a local girl but before he can find happiness he must get to bottom of this last job. a gem of a film with class and style.

I am the first in line for a solid meaningful drama, doesnt matter if it's slow or boom boom fast.
In fact I appreciate watching something a touch slower, that relies more on character and the little things. BUT, I expect it to entertain me.
And that brings me to this review for The American, for me it turned out to be just and OK film, with only a few moments of genuine drama.
George Clooney pitches in with a pretty understated and nuanced performance, and even though I didnt enjoy this movie much, I respect the fact that he juggles his movie choices between Big Studio Movies and smaller movies like this one.
The other highlight for me was the stunning Cinematography, the movie is absolutely gorgeous to look at with the Italian Setting.
Overall the film left me disappointed.
