A solid, but slow, tale about an American hit-man (George Clooney) who hides away in rural Italy. (hence he is known as 'the American'). Avoiding 'hits' he falls for a local woman.
If you can bare the pace then the film returns a quietly impressive watch. Clooney holds together quite a visually beautiful and underplayed film, focusing in on an almost silent character mixed up in his sinister profession. The idea and settings are excellent, as is the acting, and I did enjoy it. Ultimately this is a melancholic love story.
Classy, succinct and mostly gripping, a smart well thought out viewing treat.
Warning..there is an odd sex scene, aimed at providing insight into Clooney's character, but this is more miss-added than adding.
