  • The Perfect Life (30 minutes): Takes the viewer inside Valentino's homes around the world, revealing the unique lifestyle he's created for himself and the amount of work it takes to maintain it. We follow Michael Kelly, Valentino's Irish majordomo, as he prepares a lavish party at Chateau Wideville, Valentino's estate outside of Paris. In the style of Robert Altman's Gosford Park, we go back and forth between upstairs, where Valentino entertains his guests, and downstairs, where Michael Kelly directs the army of waiters, chefs and maids. In a second chapter, we fly on the private aircraft with Valentino and his entourage to Gstaad for a vacation at the glamorous ski resort. Lastly, we discover Valentino's residence on Fifth Avenue, as Valentino visits New York for the Costume Institute Benefit Gala.
  • The Last Collection (8 minutes): We see Valentino's farewell haute couture show. The show took place in January 2008 in Paris, five month after Valentino announced his retirement. Memorable for its all-red finale, the show was a last homage to Valentino's creative genius, attended by the likes of Uma Thurman, Claudia Schiffer and Muccia Prada.
  • A Red Dress (8 minutes): Takes us inside Valentino's Rome haute couture workshop where the seamstresses work on the red dress that is featured in the movie. Antonietta De Angelis reveals some of her secrets about dressmaking and working for Valentino.

Valentino The Last Emperor is a 2008 documentary film about the life of the great Italian couturier Valentino. The film is an exploration of the singular world of one of Italys most famous fashion designers.

The film documents Valentinos final couture collection and the media frenzy surrounding it. You also get to see glimpses of his beautiful collections over the past 50 years. The film tells the story of his life, and explores the larger themes affecting the fashion business today.

At the heart of the film is the unique and touching relationship between Valentino and his business partner and companion of 50 years, Giancarlo Giametti.

The production team were given exclusive access to Valentino and his entourage; Valentino is surrounded by a tight knit family of friends and employees who eventually let their guard down and on the whole forget there is a camera crew in the room.

You see that Valentino is a born dreamer and along with Karl Lagerfeld is one of the last true couturiers. He lives as lavishly as his clients with several magnificent houses dotted around the world, in addition to a private plane and yacht, he shuts out all that is not beautiful in life.

A must for anyone interested in everything beautiful, but more importantly the high end fashion industry of today.

The start is very amusing with lots of air-kissing and camp people having pretend tantrums and I've never seen quite so many wrinkly, prune-like, leathery-skinned, perfumed old people prancing around in one place.

There are some very interesting production scenes and the characters that do the work behind the scenes are very funny - e.g. the female Italian dressmakers. It's also nice to see that everything was quite "raw" and "as it really is", or at least that's how it comes across - no funny editing to distort how everything and everybody comes across.

You have to be somewhat interested in fashion to want to get the most out of this film, but all in all it's an enjoyable and interesting insight into the fashion world.
