It's a sultry summer and Vicki (Kerry Fox) returns from her long travels abroad to stay with her elder sister Beth (Lisa Harrow), an unhappy novelist whose marriage to Frenchman J.P. (Bruno Ganz) is on shaky ground. Vicki idolises Beth and wants everything her older sister has - her career, her opinions and her husband.
