An Unexpexcted Update of the Low-Budget Original

From the get go it is easy to ignore the fact that this show shares its name with the low-budget 70's original as that is pretty much all the two have in common.

In this retelling man created the Cylons, a group of cybernetic organisms that eventually became to smart and rebelled. Following a destructive War the Cylons vanished and haven't been seen for fourty years. Suddenly, and without warning, the Cylons return and launch a devastating attack on the twelve human colonies. The only thing left standing in the way of the extinction of the human race is the ageing Battlestar Galactica and its experienced commander William Adama. Most sci-fi fans will have likely heard plenty of praise for the remake and, while not as interesting as the first full season, this three hour mini-series/movie does an excellent job of setting up the premise of the show for the episodes that followed.

  A must see

Put quite simply it is no exageration to say this series intro is stunning & will get you wishing you had bought series 1 along with it so you can continue the amazing journey.

The cast, storyline, special effects & I would originality (OK its a remake but read on) make this compelling viewing.

Although this is a remake of the original 70's show it was, in my opinion getting very tiresome to have every "goody" character in a sci fi show like the original battlestar, star trek, star wars etc as a squeeky clean, morally perfect individual - always putting the good of others 1st. Commendable no doubt but not based on reality.

This "mini series" & the series' that follow give a much more accurate & believable portrayal of human nature. There are good guys of course - but every single one are good guys with flaws. Whether its struggling with drink, authority, guilt or cowardess - all come to haunt the good people that are charged with protecting a people facing extinction

You will not regret buying this - the only thing you will regret is not buying every episode - the cliff hangers in each are rivalled only by 24.

Buy this if you're still not sure - otherwise buy the box set

Enjoy!

I bought this DVD as a taster and now simply have to watch the whole series. Really high production values, good cast, script, it has the lot.

  'It has begun'

And here is where the single greatest sci-fi drama series of the last decade (if not EVER) began it's saga.

After 40 years of armistice, the Cylon race returns to destroy the 12 Colonies of Kobol, their act of mass genocide against their creators being merely the start of their return. As the handful of survivors masses around the Battlestar Galactica, the remnants of the human race set out in search of the lost 13th Colony - Earth.

With the Cylons never far behind.

Setting itself out from the start as intelligent, realistic and thought-provoking drama series, with unapologetic parallels to the world around us today, the series kicks off in style with this 3 hour mini-series.

It does a very good job of setting out the basics and introducing all the characters who would play pivotal roles over the next four years. The only slight issue is that the run time sometimes means there's a little bit of padding here and there. But it's a very small issue for such a compelling watch.

For the price you get it at just now - if you love Sci-Fi, or even if you just love smart drama series (relax, no little green men or rubber aliens in this one) then really, give it a go!

  Superb

I have never experienced the orginal series and this marked my entry into the Battlestar universe.

It is genuinely superb. Well scripted, well acted and very though provoking. Its a great set up to a character driven drama and it did its job of hooking me in very well.

I would say though, anyone wanting to get into the series really does need to start here. You wont get a good enough introduction from the Series 1 re-cap.

This opening movie to the new series is utterly fantastic. If Sci-fi is your thing (and even if it's not), you really need to see this. Once you've watched it, expect to be eager to follow the story with the first, second, third and upcoming fourth series box sets, as well as another recent movie spin-off 'Battlestar Galactica: Razor'.

All I can say is: keep them coming... SUPERB!

My mate lent me this DVD and i was unsure, i cant stand star trek and other sci-fi drama stuff like that but this had me hooked.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and i didnt care that it was almost 3 hours long because it wasnt boring at any part.
I am absolutely going to see season 1 now because i have to know what happens next.
Oh and if i could build a Cylon robot like that one i would never leave the house! :)

  battlestar galactica the mini series

While the acting might be wooden and the story seemingly made up as they went along, there is no stopping the great C.G.I and I only wished there were more huge battles, having this said, what a great little movie that simply wants any red blooded si fi fan gagging for more - on my wish list before they complete destroy all the good they have built up over the years with Battlestar, I can only wish they would make a BIG movie.
