The entirety of Wisconsin Death Trip is shot like the first five or ten minutes of P. T. Anderson's classic Magnolia - short paragraph-long fables about the town's residents through the seasons; starting in Winter.

There are re-occuring characters, some of which are worryingly hilarious; like Mary Sweeney, the window smasher.

Because this film is written like, and plays out like a review of the year just gone, it's scenes and subjects are short and sweet; drifting in and out of the viewer's attention like passing thoughts.

This is the reason the film is as good as it is. Any film that is as good to study as it is to flippantly drop in and out of is always going to be a favourite. Plus, that way, it will always have something new to offer with every viewing.

It reminds me a bit of Wogan. Wogan certainly is good enough to sit down and devotely listen to every syllable he he speaks, but he's probably best listened to while doing the dishes or playing Tetris at… more »
