  Is this the same story?

Perhaps reading the book was a mistake, or perhaps I should not have bought the DVD. Anyway, I did both. The DVD, which I am still only half way through, is almost completely unrecognisable from the book. Important and relevant details are either sketched over, or completely altered. I am flabbergasted by the necessity to mess around with a cracking read. Gave it 2 stars because of the sets.

This is a Fantastic mini-series and well worth the watch.
Its also great to watch a mini-series without the fear of it being cancelled as this series is a one off.
Lets hope there is more like Pillars of the Earth in the future.
Highly recommended.

What an accurate and fantastic adaptation of a wonderful book!! This is well worth any money - it's thoroughly entertaining and has everything an epic series should have - tragedy, revenge, action, romance and comedy! Once you start watching it you won't be able to stop! The casting is superb ( an exceptionally rare phenonemon) the settings are perfect and the acting is of highest quality! I cannot praise the film highly enough - it cannot fail to impress!!!

  Worth the hype

The book is one of my favourite novels ever so when I heard they were making it into a TV series I was excited. Needless to say I wasn't disappointed! Excellent casting, wonderful sets and, of course, a great storyline. I watched all eight episodes in one day, it really is that addictive.

Not half bad but nowhere near a classic

I quite enjoyed this. Well acted, lots of intrigue, not scared to show the harsh realities of the period but is quite annoyingly inaccurate historically. Not so big a deal for a lot of people but for me it's so damningly inaccurate it becomes a problem. King Stephen is so badly portrayed it's laughable but it's an entertaining series just lacking in historical characters. For me Sharon Penman is a far superior writer to Follett but, still, this is definitely worth a watch.

The Pillars of the Earth is further evidence that this is the Golden Age of Television - right here, right now. An outstanding cast - with some big name actors, strong female leads and a few promising newcomers - a very intelligently written screenplay that treats its audience like grown-ups and exquisite photography. A brilliant piece of work from all involved. I'm just considering upgrading to Blu-Ray and I think I might wait for this series to be available on that format.

I have never enjoyed a TV series so much, I looked forward to each Saturday when this was on, I really got into it and it takes me alot to get into most TV programmes, but this was so different, I was completely hooked and was dissapointed it had to come to an end, I highly recommend this to everyone! I was a huge fan of the novel so was so excited when I heard they were making it into a TV series. I have seen the full series and would say that on the whole it stays true to the book, there were a few changes, but this didn't affect my overall opinion of the series. I thought it was brilliantly made, the casting was spot on, the set was amazingly realistic, the eye for detail was fantastic. Even if you have never read the book you will still enjoy this story. I can't wait to own it on dvd.
