Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga, Adventureland) and Dakota Fanning (The Twilight Saga, Coraline) star as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in The Runaways, the music-fuelled coming of age story of the groundbreaking, all girl 1970s rock band, that paved the way for future generations of female musicians.

Plucked from obscurity by rock impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road), raven-haired rocker Joan, the rebellious Cherie and their band become an outrageous sensations thanks to their tough image and raw talent. But their fast, drug-fuelled lifestyle soon catches up with the teenage girls as success starts to cloud their judgments...

Kirstin Stewart and Dekota Fanning come of age as they star as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in the brilliant music and drug fuelled coming of age of the groundbreaking all girl rock band The Runaways. To be honest when the Runaways hit it big I was only five years old so I was a little to yound, but I was kind of familiar with Joan Jett with her anthem "I love Rock 'N' Roll" before Brittney Spears decided to butcher it, and a track she did on The Days of Thunder soundtrack, but apart from that it's a bit of a blur!
Stewart and Fanning are a reverlation in there rolls and perfectly capture the swagger and red hot jail bait of the leaders of the band. The film opens with a O.M.G moment and then from on is a dizzy mix of great music and drug fuelled exploits that leads to the self destuction of the group.
To be honest it may breeze over the facts but never the less is a very enjoyable movie and at times very funny.
Credit to Fanning as she belts out the signature tune "Cherry Bomb" that only goes to prove she has grown up allot since her show stealing turn in Man on Fire and is a exceptional actress aswell as a good singer. Stewart also proves she can do allot more than sulk in Teen friendly Vampire romances as ahe perfectly captures the character of Joan Jett.
The is a Rock 'N' Roll movie fans of every gender and generations should identify with.
See if you like.....
Walk The Line.
The Doors.
Spinal Tap.
Sex and drugs and Rock 'N'Roll.
Boogie Nights.

when i saw this film, i litterally fell in love with it, it was such a good movie about how Joan Jett and the rest of the runaway members got together. Kristen Stewart did an amazing job in the runaways portraying Joan Jett, as did Dakota Fanning portraying Cherrie Currie absolutely brilliant. I love Kristen Stewart anyway she is such a good actress and she is so down to earth, so thats one of the reason i wanted to see it and im so happy i did :) 10/10 x

The Runaways (2010) is a music biopic starring Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Stella Maeve, Tatum O'Neal and Michael Shannon.

The cast in this movie are pretty terrific. Stewart displays a charisma and energy we have not seen before. Fanning gives the most adult and daring role of her career and Shannon steals scenes around them.

The main problem with this movie though is that its too quick and only skirts around the darker aspects. Its also incredibly unfair to the other members of The Runaways, both Lita Ford and Sandy West hardly feature while the movie only seems interested in telling the Joan Jett and Cherie Currie story.

Director Floria Sigismondi does a solid job and gets career best performances out of her young cast but I just felt this movie was too quick and lightweight to really be regarded alongside great music biopics like The Doors, Ray, Walk The Line or Sid & Nancy.

Definitely worth giving it a shot!

I'm not normally a fan of Kristen Stewart, but I do LOVE Joan Jett - by golly does she do her justice! I can't get over how much she took on Joan's look and attitude perfectly.

The film itself is based on Cherie Currie's biography (Neon Angel) so, if you're a diehard Runways/Joan Jett fan, you'll not get as much of them as you'd like to. In itself though, Dakota makes the role her own, and the film (whilst being inspired by, but not a word-for-word account of Cherie's book) gives you a really good insight into the trials a young star has to face, particularly when battling with the insecuries that are inherent in any teenager and how drugs, abuse and loneliness can really test someone when in that environment.

Kim Fowley seems so sedate compared to the things he's accused of in Cherie's book. I doubt the film would be a certificate 15 then though...
