Directed by Leonard Nimoy, and starring off-the-wall comedian Gene Wilder as New York cartoonist Duffy Bergman, 'Funny About Love' is about Bergman's desire to father a child and the surreal and slightly obscure elements of being in love.
Wilder's often deranged and paranoid portrayal of one man's desire to enter the realm of parenthood and responsibility reveals a humorous yet touching insight into the battlefield that love can be. Bergman's inability to socially interact with people, especially women, on any normal level creates a tension that Wilder plays on with a range of bizarre social hang-ups.
Wilder's witty and surreal characterisation sustains the impossibly juvenile world Bergman inhabits. As he draws the women in his life deeper into the recesses of his neurosis, Bergman causes the lives of those around him to twist out of view of their normal and sane routines: a trip to the fertility clinic and the bizarre death of his mother are highlights in a canon of hopeless events that conspire to obstruct Bergman from fulfilling his ultimate goal of Fatherhood.
Gene Wilder, on top comedic form, makes this an enjoyable and quirky take on modern love.
