  Beautiful Gritty And Exciting.

Open Range (2003) is a western starring Robert Duvall, Kevin Costner, Annette Bening and Michael Gambon.

This movie is a great mixture of beautiful cinematography and realistic gritty action. The first half of the movie allows the characters to develop while the second half is full of action.

Robert Duvall is terrific giving one of his best performances in years while Kevin Costner is great support with his strong but silent character. The chemistry between Duvall and Costner is what holds this movie together.

There are a few problems though. The romance between Costner and Bening feels rushed and the time spent developing it would have been better spent with Duvall. Also a few lines of dialogue are a bit cheesy and cliched.

But they are just small problems and overall they do not get in the way of an excellent movie. Kevin Costner (who also directed) has crafted a beautiful, gritty and exciting western. Not quite as good as Dances With Wolves but still very good.

  A Masterpiece

I love a good western, especially one with a couple of extremely violent
Shootouts and Evil irish Dudes ( Michael Gambon), where a couple of ranchers stand up to the corrupt lawmen and lowlife scum. A Excellent film.

  A simple story brilliantly told.

Who ever said that Costner's career was on the rocks, then they should take another look at this under-rated classic. It doesn't mean a damn if his starring films don't ring the box-office tills like they used to, it's the quality of his Directed films that count. Just like Dances with Wolves this a brilliantly told old fashiond western, that relies on the development of character over action. Costner is great but Duvall is simply fantastic as his boss who play a bunch of ranch's who drift into a town who don't take kindly to their kind and once the first stone is thrown it turns into a tale of revenge leading to a brilliant shoot-out. The film has a truly authentic feel and the attention to detail is fantastic. It may have taken me almost nine years to sit down and watch this but I am glad I did.
Brilliant!

One of the westerns of all time

Brilliantly shot and acted western, the story is moving and you feel for all characters. Yes you have the hero's and villians but thats what makes a western. To be fair the vast open range sums up a balanced view of the old west. Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner really make this movie.

  Classic Western...

Open Range is a film about some 'Free-grazing' Cowboys. When a corrupt Marshall tries to drive them out of the county they are forced to arm themselves for protection. Like Clint Eastwood's 'Unforgiven' there's a lot of suspense and a great shoot-out near the end. Similar to 'Unforgiven' but not as dark as there's a little Romantic tale within the film.

This is a very good western, along the line of unforgiven by clint eastwood. Kevin costner shows that he knows the genre and gives us a good story, good characterbuilding and beautiful shot pictures.
The actors are at their best, with robert duvall again as an older and wiser cowboy with a lot of spirit. All together, more mature and true to the westerngenre than 'dances with wolves' this movie is harder/harsher, more black&white, good& bad and more convincing.
