Open Range (2003) is a western starring Robert Duvall, Kevin Costner, Annette Bening and Michael Gambon.
This movie is a great mixture of beautiful cinematography and realistic gritty action. The first half of the movie allows the characters to develop while the second half is full of action.
Robert Duvall is terrific giving one of his best performances in years while Kevin Costner is great support with his strong but silent character. The chemistry between Duvall and Costner is what holds this movie together.
There are a few problems though. The romance between Costner and Bening feels rushed and the time spent developing it would have been better spent with Duvall. Also a few lines of dialogue are a bit cheesy and cliched.
But they are just small problems and overall they do not get in the way of an excellent movie. Kevin Costner (who also directed) has crafted a beautiful, gritty and exciting western. Not quite as good as Dances With Wolves but still very good.
