Something strange is happening in the town of Stepford. The men spend their nights doing something secret, and every woman acts like every man's dream of the 'perfect' wife. A young woman watches the dream become a nightmare - she sees the nightmare engulf her best friend and realises that at any moment, any second, her turn is coming.

This is a thought-provoking and intriguing movie which cultivates a sense of momentum through a growing feeling of paranoia. Substituting the pace and action of a stereotypical sci-fi movie, the strength of the film lies in its subtlety and the way in which the proceedings take place in a seemingly normal domestic setting. Using a realistic social context, it combines issues that existed in 1970s society and pushes them to the edge of realistic oblivion. Levin wrote and Forbes directed this masterpiece in a time when women were being pulled in many different directions: family, career, feminism, motherhood and marriage to name but a few, all of which are covered in this film.

I thought I'd better put a review in for this film as I have just reviewed the remake with Nicole Kidman. I was so shocked other watchers rated the remake highly, I was forced to put in my first review! I love this film as it takes the conflict that was emerging at the time when women were standing up for their rights in this second wave of feminism, but shows how men were probably threatened by this and afraid of loosing their strong position within society's structures. This film takes these issues and puts a surreal horror like spin on the issues of the day - made more creepy because the plot is rooted in real fears brought about by the changing role of women.
