Rio is a cute, likeable family film, with some charming characters and a silly plot to keep things moving and entertaining. The musical elements are a welcomed injection of fun, and the Brazilian backdrops and scenes make the film feel refreshingly individual and upbeat.
The story surrounds a pet parrot that is the last male of the species. He is united with the last female blue macaw, but has to escape various kidnapping attempts. Being a pet he cannot fly, so relies on the help of his new friends, all of which are Brazilian birds. There is also a dog, monkeys and a nasty parrot called Nigel!
One of the better kids films of 2011, Rio is a bright, lively, modern animated escapade. Very Ice Age-esque.
