No one will watch this without knowing the man, the story, the ending - but you will all be crying your eyes out. This film shows how the world, how F1 was back then. Not sterile as now but deadly dangerous. Every driver on the grid now, owes his safety to these years, these events, the late and irreplaceable Sid Watkins. Ayrton, Roland, Rubens on that weekend. And the terrible history of the sport up until then. A really gut wrenching DVD but unmissable.
I loved Ayrton Senna, I worshipped the man and I remember the Sunday 1st May 1994 vividly as the day he died on the Imola track. I remember watching it unfold horrified and then a few hours later being told on the news reports that he was gone. I thought it must be some mistake. Unfortunately not.
I bought the dvd in 2004 "The Official Tribute" and was left very disapointed in that there was more of Senna off track relaxing in Brazil than him on track doing his awesome job.
This 2011 "Senna" puts that right and shows all the glory and the Senna V Prost rivalry that turned very very nasty. At one time both men fiercly hated each other BUT were on the same team. The dvd seems to suggest that they made up a little bit before Senna's tragic accident so that's a nice feeling. This dvd is the best documentary about Ayrton Senna that you could wish for. Senna died in 1994 and from 1994 to 2004 Michael Schumacher won 7 World Titles. If Senna had still been driving would he still have won them?
Piecing together footage and interviews Senna follows the career of the legendary Brazilian Formula One driver Ayrton Senna from his arrival in Europe in 1978 to his tragic death in 1994 aged just thirty-four.
Whether you are a formula one fan or not this insight into one of motor racings, indeed sports, most unique personalities makes for a fascinating and moving watch throughout.

This is quite simply a stunning film. Ayrton Senna's life is recorded in a truly momentous documentary feature that comprises thankfully no talking heads, just voiceovers from those that loved and knew this legendary sportsman, amongst them Alain Prost and members of Senna's own family. Interspersed with fantastic racing action from his ten years in Formula One, you get a rare glimpse of what his life was like away from the glare of publicity as he steadily rose to become a sporting hero in his native Brazil, while climbing his way up the Formula One ladder from his spectacular performance in the rain at the 1984 Monaco grand prix (driving for Toleman) to the pinnacle of his career when becoming a three-times World Champion with McLaren. His now infamous rivalry with Prost is detailed (I think without the producers slanting it any particular way, much to their credit) but never becomes a hatchet job on either driver and this adds to the quality of the narrative. The last fifteen minutes are terribly difficult to watch as the tragically inevitable conclusion is reached, but this is above all else a film that celebrates a global sporting legend and a deeply religious, thoughtful human being. I can't recommend this highly enough, as this should prove to be equally as gripping to non-motorsport viewers as well as Formula One fans.
