At last 'Arrivederci Millwall' has finally got a DVD release. This made for TV film was only ever shown once back in 1990 on BBC2, luckily I recorded it from the TV so have always had a copy, although they did cut it. Now I can get a better quality copy on DVD.
Set in 1982 the story is based on a group of Millwall fans planned trip to the world cup in Spain. The side story to this is the ongoing Falklands war and the fact the one of the members of the firm has a brother involved in the conflict.
I have seen all the football/hooligan films over the years and to me this is the best along with the original 'The Firm' starring Gary Oldman. The reason these two are head and shoulders above the rest are because they look and feel real. They both have great casting and the characters are realistic, plus there are more to these films than just mindless violence, you get a real feel of what life was like in the 1980's.
I have never been that impressed with the wannabe films like 'Football Factory', 'ID', 'Green Street' etc, with their over the top slang and violence, it all seems so fake to me. Forget all those and stick the the original and best of the genre, 'Arrivederci Millwall' is only matched by the original 'The Firm', and both are still the best of the bunch.
