I have found that many of those who hate this movie are ignorant of the television series on which it is based. Producer Jerry Weintraub and director Jeremiah Chechik went to a lot of trouble to recreate its unique look and feel. 'The Avengers' is set in a Britain where the '60's never ended, where vintage cars and bowler hats co-exist happily alongside computers and mobile phones. Writer Don Macpherson skilfully captured the wit and sheer outrageousness which made the teleplays of Brian Clemens and Philip Levene so memorable. Replacing Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg was never going to be easy, but Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman gave it their best shot. It could have been worse - Mel Gibson and Sharon Stone were originally tipped for the roles! As 'Sir August DeWynter', Sir Sean Connery gave a bombastic performance in keeping with the series' spirit. With so many things going for it, the movie should have been a smash hit. As I write this, a campaign is under way to get a Special Edition D.V.D. released. If sucessful, I believe the film's ( largely undeserved ) reputation as a flop will disappear. For a real flop, try the Eddie Murphy version of 'I Spy', or better yet the grotesque travesty that was 'Wild Wild West'!
