From the Director of 'Independence Day' comes a spectacular roller-coaster ride that boasts pulse-pounding action and sensational, mindblowing special effects.

When global warming triggers the onset of a new Ice Age, tornadoes flatten Los Angeles, a tidal wave engulfs New York City and the entire Northern Hemisphere begins to freeze solid. Now, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a small band of survivors must ride out the growing superstorm to stay alive in the face of an enemy more powerful and relentless than any they've ever encountered... Mother Nature!

Stunning Special Effects and a Pretty Good Story

Wasn't to sure about this movie as couldn't be bothered to watch it at cinema when it came out as it looked like a silly Special Effects movie.
I was wrong, watched it and really enjoyed it, the story was good and suspenseful as well as scary. The Special Effects were amazing and pretty realistic.
The performance by Jake Gynellhal was good, but it was Dennis Quaid's performance that was brilliant, and it was good to see him headlining a Big Budget Studio Movie.

Wish I could go back in time...

... and tell myself never to watch this movie. This must have been the worst movie from 2004. The plot is farfetched to say the least, and the internal logic of the movie leaves much to be desired.

The behavior of the characters makes little sense, and apparently the world suffering from mayor damage due to climat change isn't interesting enough, since they have to add a few ridiculous scenes and plotlines to keep the audience's attention ( one revolves around escaped animals from the zoo, which surely must be an important concern when entire cities are destroyed by tidal waves)

A movie which is clearly the product of the ridiculous panic mongering caused by environmentalists, and really has little substance to it whatsoever. It's only merit being it's special effects.

The movie also lacks to bring a realistic image of the political and military consequences of the story it's bringing, let alone deal with aftermath of such an event. The movie ends with such a ridiculous positive note that you will certainly feel like doing the same I did: throwing it in the garbage

Now it's fiction... Tomorrow it's real

I though this was a great film by director Roland Emmerich. It is a fast-paced, exciting, suspenseful film filled with great CGI effects, good acting. How realistic is it? Well as other people have written in there reviews they dont see how this can happen to the world in just a few days granted this is true, but the idea of the film was to show global warming sped up and with this in mind one day this outcome may very much become real, but the director made the film so that it seems very real and like something that MIGHT happen that quickly. The story revolves around some major climatic shifts that cause the entire Northern hemisphere to become Artic tundra. New York City is devastated as are other major cities all over Europe. Dennis Quaid gives a good performance as a climatologist that predicted some of these events. We see things through his perspective and that of his son for much of the movie. The acting in general is good in this film. I particularly liked Ian Holm's role as the British meteorologist stuck in the middle of nowhere while these changes advanced. Much of the credit for the film's success must go to Emmerich. This is easily one of his best films. He keeps his viewer on the edge of his/her seat through the entire film. In my eyes a very good film even if others dont agree.

Excellent plot / well acted film

Those people who say the plot isn't possible are obviously Americans with their heads stuck up their bums (nothing against Americans generally but they do tend to deny global warming)!

Global warming is happening and the plot is entirely possible - look at New Orleans.

Look at the last Ice Age, if the Gulf Stream diverts we're all stuffed.

As for the film, it's excellent, much better plot than your average disaster movie and well acted. Leaves the ridiculous plot of Armagedon totally in the shade in my opinion.
