Originally airing 20 years ago in 1984, this season sees Sam (Ted Danson) and Diane (Shelley Long) face the break-up of their explosive relationship - a predicament that brings the new character of Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammar) into the show's comedic mix.

Along with the usual laughs provided by the antics of Carla (Rhea Perlman), Cliff (John Ratzenberger) and Norm (George Wendt), this series also says farewell to actor Nicholas "Coach" Colosanto, whose untimely death occurred shortly after the taping of the episode "Cheerio, Cheers" in the middle of the season.

Episode highlights include "King of the Hill" where Sam volunteers to play in a charity softball game against Playboy Playmates; "The Heart Is a Lonely Snipehunter", arguably one of the best slices of American comedy, sees the guys pull a cruel joke on Frasier while they're on a fishing trip; and the season finale "Rescue Me" where Diane accepts Frasier's proposal when Sam denies his feelings for her.

The genius of the third season lies in how the comedy goes beyond the usual anecdotal formulae of the conventional sitcom. Undoubtedly this show is a television icon that most comedies for generations will be compared to. Echoes of it's polished wit and charm can be seen all too often in modern US sit-coms such as Friends and Frasier.
