 Not a Smith Film

This film got severly slated on it release and didn't do very well in the cinema. The project came about through Kevin and Ben wanting to produce a combined effort film. Bit of a mistake as it completely different to Smith's usual genre and not what everyonr expected. Anyway, an interesting film nevertheless.

Thought this film was great! I never stopped crying all the way through it though, very moving of a man who brings up his child on his own.

 Unfairly Bashed Gem.

Jersey Girl (2004) suffered at the box-office because of the awful Gigli which also happened to star Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Alot of critics didn't give this movie a chance which is a real shame because its an underated gem.

Ben Affleck stars as workaholic Ollie Trinke who loses his wife (Jennifer Lopez) during child birth. This tragedy sends Trinke into breakdown resulting in him losing his job and being forced to go back to New Jersey to live with his father (George Carlin).

Trinke begins to settle into a lonely life raising his precocious daughter (Raquel Castro) until he falls for freespirited rental clerk Maya (Liv Tyler). Then when a new city job opportunity arises he is forced to examine his life and learns that family is more important then a career.

The comparisons with Gigli are completely unfair. Lopez's involvement is hardly more then an extended cameo. Affleck gives a great performance and shows real depth in a more mature role. Tyler is cute and there's great comedic support from Carlin and Jason Biggs.

Writer/director Kevin Smith (Clerks/Chasing Amy) made Jersey Girl in an attempt to break away from his Jay & Silent Bob franchise and make more mature movies. Jersey Girl is very funny, quite beautifully touching and also features some of the normal Smith pop culture dialogue.

The DVD features two commentary's. One from writer/director Kevin Smith, producer Scott Mosier and special guest Jason Mewes, the other from Smith and his star Ben Affleck. There's also plenty of documentaries and other extras to enjoy.
