Bertolucci clearly enjoys the cinematic references in this film, which is, in part, a paean to the glory days of Hollywood. This aspect of the movie is perhaps the most successful.

Set against the backdrop of the 1968 Parisian riots, The Dreamers is a study of sexual awakening and youthful idealism. The claustrophobic and cloistered world of Parisian brother and sister, Theo and Isabelle, becomes a place of discovery for them and the American innocent Matthew, whom they invite to join them while their laissez-faire parents are away. Within their sprawling apartment the three indulge in games of sexual manipulation that turn into obsession and confused despair.

The problem with this otherwise impressive film is that Adair's characters are too self-absorbed. They fail to elicit much of a response due to their pretentious navel-gazing. Sure, people like this exist, and they can make interesting subjects, but here they are mostly tedious to observe. The film also fails to capture any of the tension that must have existed in the city during the riots. As a result of these failings the movie does not linger for long in the memory.

This is not a bad film by any means, but it is rather disappointing given the talent involved.

That whole period aroud the Paris riots in the late 60s is really interesting and this could have been such a cool film. I honestly thought it was pap though.

This is one of the worst films I have ever seen. Just terrible. Really, really bad. no story at all, just clips from old films and eva green in the altogether to distract from the lack of plot.

Paris is not only the city of passionate escapisms, but also the set of this delicate film, The Dreamers, by Bernardo Bertolucci.
Despite its taboo genre of incest, the film is actually quite artistic in form and is not vulgar. It's a study of youth, cinema, melody and cultural interactions during the 1960's Paris riots...I believe the intensity of the film may reflect your own view of life.

Really enjoyed this film, and not just because Eva Green got naked in it!
Quite interesting to see clips of classic french cinema in there as well. Its not an amazing film, but well worth buying!

Also, this one was of the first ever carbon-neutral films!

I can't make my mind up about this film. Seems far fetched to me, but I enjoy watching it. It's pretty shocking though. I do love the acting in it, they all seem quite comfortable to act completely naked which I assume is hard to do! It's definitely an acquired taste though. Bit of trivia, at the beginning of the movie when Eva Green's hair catches fire briefly, that wasn't meant to happen!

Read this, Eva Green naked. No. One more time, EVA GREEN NAKED. What you waiting. This film gets three stars just for that. This review ain't highbrow, it's at the basic level. I can say no more about this film other than Eva Green naked. I'd love to say it has a great script or it has great acting or that it's well directed, but honestly i can't remember. I sort of forgot when i saw Eva Green naked. If you want a intelligent film that looks at the 60's in Paris through the eyes of a American Stu..... oh come on she's naked, i can see why they called it The Dreamers. Anyway, buy this film if you want to see Eva Green naked, and if you don't, whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhat. If you watched Casino Royale and thought, em Eva Green i'd like to see more of her, i think you get the picture. This film would get 5 stars if she were naked for all the film, though with the fastforward button she can be, but unfortunatly she's not...............................................but for a vast majority you do get EVA GREEN NAKED.

I loved this film. Its edgy, sexy, shocking, inspiring and disturbing. The juxtaposition of incestuous twins exuuuuding sex, set in a black and white movie style romance situation against Parisian riots with 70's rock and roll AND amazing film references is just.... wooow
Not to mention you get the best of every world! Micheal Pitt, Louis Garell and Eva Green naked as the day they were born for the majority is quite something.
Reccomended, but not for those who are prudish...

this is a wonderful film, very imaginative, great moments like runnign through the louvre, yes there is a lot of sex but the other content of the film such as the script and the acting more than makes up for it.

When I purchased this dvd it sounded like a great film; set in the student riots of 1960s Paris, with continual references to film, art and culture and a soundtrack consisting of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, not to mention starring both Eva Green and Michael Pitt. It sounded like a perfect combination of political context, art, sex and music, with the added bonus of being a french film. However, the film detracts far too much from any rioting at all and instead focusses on a disturbing relationship between two twins where nudity is a constant factor. If Bertolucci had spent more time cultivating a proper storyline and less time zooming in to every conceavable body part of the actors (which is at least 70% of the film), it could have been a memorable piece of French cinema. There's nothing wrong with a bit of sex, but this is neither classy nor alluring and leaves you feeling pretty nausceous, particularly with the theme of insest. I doubt I'll ever give it a second viewing.
