Two brothers, the headstrong Ivan and his gentle elder sibling Andrey, live with their mother in a remote Russian town. One day their lives are shattered by the appearance of their long-lost father whom they can only recollect from a ten year old photograph.
The reappearance brings with it a whole host of unanswered questions. Is he really their father and why has he come back after all this time? Reunited on a fishing trip, tensions quickly come to the surface and events take a tragic turn...
Andrei Zvyagintsev's eerily atmospheric drama won the Golden Lion for best film at the 2003 Venice Film Festival.

It has the quality visuals of a western film with the alternative views and charms of a foreign film. I loved the colours used and the awesome Russian land scape Konstantin Lavronenko gives a great performance and is now a best actor winner at cannes for his new film by the same director. It could be argued that the two younger actors really do lead the film to its climactic end. On the outset it may seem quiet straight forward but it's full Religious undertones but you may miss. This has been one of the best films i've seen this year...even beating Die Hard 4.0..yeah right! 7/10
