This is a true story...
1986 to 1991: in a small town outside Seoul, over the course of six years 10 women are raped and murdered in a radius of just 2km. Against a backdrop of air raid drills and fear of invasion from the north, South Korean society's first serial killer takes the lives of 10 victims, ranging from a 71 year-old grandmother to a 13 year old schoolgirl.
At a time in South Korea when a murder investigation only meant grilling those who knew the victim, for these officers everything was a new experience. There was no profiling mechanism, nor any idea of preserving the crime scene for forensic investigation. Only search and interrogation based on the detectives' sense of duty and persistence.
In this age of ignorance and with South Korea still under a dictatorship, two detectives at the bottom of an ill-supported police force have only themselves to rely on to face this horrific series of events....
Bong Joon-ho's classy thriller, the highest-grossing Korean film in 2003, won a trio of prizes at the Grand Bell Awards for Best Actor (Song Kang-ho), Best Director and Best Film.

I have a very large collection of South Korean dvds. And this is one of the best not just Korean but World Cinema movies ever. It^s starts funny with the local moron police officers trying to frame anyone for the murders, then turns very intense and tragic when the Seoul detective joins the team to catch the serial killer of 10 women. (A true story). With a shocking end. An apsolute must see film. Unfortunately my Optimum release dvd had several picture faults throughout. So had to return it and get deplacement.
Stunning

This film is easily one of the best serial killer films I have ever seen.
It is so incredibly tense, gripping and dark. And knowing that it is based on a true story (explained in the extra features), makes it so much more emotional and touching to know and learn the victims' stories.
This film keeps you guessing all the way to the very end on whether the killer was actually caught... Was he/she? You'll have to watch to find out...
It's worth it... Trust me.
Enjoy.
Stunning and unique

The Times wrote "Astonishing. Perhaps the best serial-killer movie ever made" and I agree. It's very provocative, extremely tense, blackly humorous and it stars Song Kang-Ho who is one of Korea's finest actors. Memories of murder is easily the best film to come out of Korea. A MUST-SEE
