- Commentary by Jerry Lewis and Steve Lawrence
An absolutely hilarious twist on the popular Cinderella fairytale sees Jerry Lewis playing a bumbling no-hoper called Fowler, who is granted his heart's desire by a good spirit and wins the love of a beautiful princess.
Cinderfella is the story of downtrodden Fowler who lives his life through various fantasies to escape the mundane existence of looking after his step-mother and two evil step-brothers, Maximilian and Rupert. When his fairy Godfather appears to him in the form of a good spirit and grants him his wish that a beautiful princess fall in love with him, Fowler's life is transformed. A gentler paced comedy than other Lewis films, Cinderfella still contains the farcical style of humour Lewis pioneered. Touching moments such as Fowler pulling a branch from an orange tree through the kitchen window and cutting-off the fruit to squeeze fresh orange juice for the family, highlight Lewis' ability to construct a character that is both believable and funny.
The musical score of the film fuels the fairytale element and sets-up the comedy perfectly. Sending up a world where perfection and style outweigh a more basic need for genuine human interaction, Lewis' character serves as a symbol for charm and the desire to succeed no matter what the obstacles. An off-beat romantic comedy before the genre truly came into the fore of cinema, Cinderfella is warm-hearted, with a score of dance numbers that sustain the magical and special atmosphere that Lewis' films deserve. The supporting cast expertly play-out their roles and colour the story with a sense of fun making the film an enjoyable and thoughtful classic from the Jerry Lewis cannon.
