  great prequel

| | See all premorph1's reviews (3)

This is a fantastic horror film, which is good in the world of films where teens get axed to death after taking wrong turns on vacation.
Good strong cast, no over the top effects, it really is in keeping with the 1982 thing and starts the story off well. This is a prequel, not a remake and answers some of the questions I'd thought about all these years after seeing the first film which is now the second, confused myself there. Get this and give it a watch its brilliant. Thats all I have to say on it, it really is that good, enjoy the flick.

  Suprisingly decent..............if familiar.

And the main reason it's familiar is because it really can't help but be forced to essentially retread the plot developments of John Carpenter's 1982 version of 'The Thing'.

Remote outpost finds alien..........alien escapes and runs amok within the group..........all hell breaks loose...........cut to tie in to the opening of the 1982 film.

That's it's main problem, which is unfortunate because IF the other version didn't exist this would be more enjoyable. Because on it's own it's probably one of the better remakes/reboots of the horror genre out there. It has great production design and visuals, good photography, the cast is capable (Mary Elizabeth Winstead is very good as is Joel Edgerton in sort of the Kurt Russell role) and it's suprisingly well directed. The CGI beast can't compare with the practical effects of the 1982 version and let the film down at times during some transformations however, but where this film relies on practical effects itself, it's as good.

All in, entertaining, but still not quite as good as Carpenters.

  Not Quite The Thing....

This film is an impressive Prequel. Theres some good effects that despite the CGI still pay homage to the Graphics from the original film. Like other reviewers i just felt this lacked the suspense of the original. It also lacks the characters and overall coolness / cult feel the original had. However its still a good film maybe aimed at a more Sci-Fi based audience. Overall a good effort compared to other Prequels!

  Good prequel.

If you remind yourself that this is a PREQUEL to John Carpenter's classic, then you won't be disappointed. There are a few reasons why i didn't enjoy this as much as the original. In my opinion, there is very little suspense compared to John Carpenter's, but you do see a lot more of the creature during this one, also more gore, and you get a better insite into the events that happened at the Norwegian base (from what you see in the original). I didn't enjoy this as much as JC's, but it's a great one to have as a sort of tie in to the classic.

Very well done. . . but

Straight atfter watching this,I put on the Thing ( it's a bit confusing isn't it ? ) And I was amazed at how well the continuity was handled ,all the events ,even minor details seemed to tie in ,the only things that were a bit iffy that I noticed was how did all the explosives end up on the helicopter ,when it took off just after it arrived and on the old thing when they abseiled down to the ship what did they anchor the ropes to ? did they tie them to a sleeping Polar bear ?This should be another lesson to Mr Lucus on how to do prequels that make sense ( they didn't even come up with a jar jar binks type character )

  fitting prequel

like many reviewers i was worried that this version of the thing wouldnt do its predecessor from 1982 credit. i was wrong its a fitting prequel and i was very impressed with the attention to detail that ties the 82 version with this one. the film follows the lines of its predecessor in that group of scientist types discover alien that runs riot round the base. it lack the suspense this time round and the thing gets more on screen time, special effects are good tho not brilliant but thats a small gripe, i want to give it a 5 rating but that would make it as good as our classic by john carpenter with kurt russeland it just falls short. just mind. if sci-fi your thing then get this thing.

I really enjoyed the first one but i loved this one more as it had me on the edge of my seat the whole time and is really jumpy! More than worth a watch.

  a worthy effort

the 1982 film is my favourite sci fi film ever so i was slightly worried about this prequel spoiling the karma. have to say it was better than i expected. its not as terryfying or suspenseful as the 1982 film but thats not through lack of trying. the fx are pretty good aswell with a decent blend of cgi and make-up. also there are some nice little touches in terms of tying this film into the following events. all in all it would have been so easy to mess this up big-time but the production team have managed to conceive a film that most 'thing' fans will appreciate. nothing will ever top kurt and the boys though.....
