A stunningly acted drama from first time writer/director Derek Cianfrance, starring Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling as a married couple teetering on the brink after a few years together.

Told partly in flashbacks the film moves between a final weekend the couple spend in a motel which brings the couple's relationship to a head, and the time years earlier when their relationship began, allowing for the contrasts in their feelings towards each other to be clear to the audience.

Williams and Gosling create one of the most emotionally believable relationships I think I've seen in a long time, improvising many scenes and creating real people, not mere characters, in their work. Williams deserved her Best Actress Oscar nomination for the role and she's just one of my favourite actresses out there just now.

It's not a happy film, it won't make you feel good, and as such maybe not for everybody, but if you are in the mood for a small film of this type, then it will offer a compelling and emotionally draining look at two people who just can't be together anymore.

Just watched this film and was brought to tears with the emotional connection you can feel with the characters, good film and brilliant cast too.

 bittersweet and brilliant

It's not often you get a love story which combines true romance with the painfully honest side of relationships, but this film manages to do just that. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams give standout performances, playing their parts with depth and raw emotion, and the cinematography has a beautiful quality to it. Definitely one of the best films of 2011.

 A very powerful film

I thought this film was brilliant, it isn't easy to watch and I found it very sad but so powerful. Performances from both Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams are fantastic.

This film is amazing! So beautifully acted, raw and real. One of the best films I've seen in such a long time. Michelle Williams is so underated, her indie film Mammoth is awesome too. Gosling is amazing as always. Definately worth a mililon watch's!
