Die Hard New York cop John McClane, facing Christmas alone, flies to Los Angeles to see his estranged wife Holly (Bonnie Bedelia) and their kids in an attempt to patch things up. He arrives at his wife's high tech office building in the middle of their Christmas party just as it is gatecrashed by the ruthless master criminal Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) and a dozen fellow activists intent on relieving the Nakatomi Corporation of six hundred million dollars in negotiable bonds...

McClane's a maverick smartass with a distinct disdain for being given orders. He's alone, tired, hurting and the only chance anyone has got. Twelve bad guys, one cop. The odds are against John McClane; just the way he likes it!

Die Hard 2 - Die Harder A band of commandos led by a murderous officer seize an international airport. Their aim is to rescue a drug baron (Franco Nero) from justice. Detective McClane (Bruce Willis) finds himself having to battle tough anti-terrorists squads, and a deadly snowstorm to break the grip of the terrorists who have control of the plane that is carrying his wife...

Die Hard With A Vengeance This time, New York cop John McClane (Willis) is the personal target of the mysterious Simon (Jeremy Irons), a terrorist determined to blow up the entire city if he doesn't get what he wants. Accompanied by an unwilling civilian partner (Samuel L. Jackson), McClane careens wildly from one end of New York City to the other as he struggles to keep up with Simon's deadly game.

It's a battle of wits between a psychopathic genius and a heroic cop who once again finds himself having a really bad day...

Die Hard (5/5) - The best action movie from the 80s.

Die Hard 2 (3/5) - More violent (in the 18 version), more explosive and bigger than the original - the only thing lacking is a proper baddie.

Die Hard 3 (3/5) - Better script than 'Die Hard 2', but still not as good as the original. Starts off with plenty of ideas, although loses its way in the last act.

 DVD Error - Otherwise Awesome

This is without a doubt one of the best trilogy deals to purchase on Play.com

One word of warning though. Do check the DVD's immediately after purchase!

I bought my box set in Feb this year and it was not until tonight that I sat down to watch the first one. I was devastated to find that the brand new DVD skipped a complete chapter during normal viewing. It appears the chapter doesn't exist on the DVD at all (I searched using a PC) and it just ruined what was going to be another amazing purchase from play.com

The lesson here is simple. If you buy from play, make sure you check the DVD within the returns period. Otherwise you could be stuck with a dud like me!

This year sees the long-awaited return of one John McClane saving the world from terrorist all over again in Die Hard 4.0. Whether the final product will be any good is still open to discussion but what is certain is that the original trilogy, here presented in a fantastic value 6 disc boxset, remain some of the best action movies ever made. In fact, the '88 original, to me, IS the greatest action movie ever made. Brought up on an endless diet of macho Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Van Damme vehicles Bruce Willis here portrays a typical joe, an everyman who just happen to be caught up in 'the wrong place at the wrong time' Wisecracking his way through all three movies these were the films that launched Willis's career into the stratosphere and made him the star he is today. How many times have you heard a film described as 'Die Hard' on a boat/plane/train and so on? THAT is how influential the adventures of John McClane have become in the history of action cinema, and THAT is why I'm crossing my fingers that Len Wiseman does justice to the originals in his forthcoming release. Yipee-ki-yay....

 Great Price, Great Trilogy
