Visually arresting, highly allusive drama in which a hugely out-of-condition Brando somehow pulls of the impossible and looks right for the part. Unfortunately his improvised mumblings are largely incoherent and an English Degree comes in useful if trying to make sense of the plot. Coppola, meanwhile, ended up a Kurtz-like figure after finishing this film, presiding over a blighted output which has never recovered. But he was good in the 70s, for which we should be grateful.
And finally, choose this over the extended "Redux" version, which is interesting for what they left out but lacks focus.
Perfection

Epic. Truly epic. This is not a film. It's an experience. Once watched, never forgotten.
It's not a traditional war film, in the mold of something like Platoon or Saving Private Ryan, but this makes it even better. Throw in Brando, Sheen, Duvall and Hopper, some astounding moments, dialogue and cinematography, and Coppola, perhaps the worlds best filmmaker, and it equals perfection.
Watch, embrace, believe. Cinema at its finest
