Martha Marcy May Marlene is a powerful psychological thriller starring Elizabeth Olsen as Martha, a young woman rapidly unravelling amidst her attempt to reclaim a normal life after fleeing from a cult and its charismatic leader (John Hawkes). Seeking help from her estranged older sister Lucy (Sarah Paulson) and brother-in-law (Hugh Dancy), Martha is unable and unwilling to reveal the truth about her disappearance. When her memories trigger a chilling paranoia that her former cult could still be pursuing her, the line between Martha's reality and delusion begins to blur.

Hard to believe Olsen was ignored for the Oscars, her performance is so good. This won't be everybodies cup of tea, being slow moving and more a character study of someone who may or may not be mad. Wasn't sure about the ending but on reflection I think it suits the film just perfectly.

A well made psychological drama following the paranoia and struggle in the wake of a young woman's escape from a cult and her attempt to adjust to life outside of it.

With a fantastic performance at the centre by actress Elizabeth Olsen who gets all the notes right, but also well supported by Sarah Paulson and also John Hawkes as the leader of the cult (calm and hypnotically relaxed as he goes about his business) itself this is a solid and unflashy drama, minimally directed to allow performances to get through.

The only gripe I had was an ambigous ending. While that kind of ending doesn't often affect my enjoyment of a film, I kind of felt that in this case it wasn't quite necessary. It most certainly did not ruin the film for me at all, but I didn't love that part either.
