If you've seen the original you don't need to know much about the story, its the same basic setup but with a few extra elements.
It's quite a long movie at 2 hours 30 but it doesn't feel long, its well written and keeps developing throughout, the story moves smoothly and feels like its flying by.
It's an all star cast, there's a huge amount of big names in this film and hardly a single new face in the bunch. Good performances by all, can't find a poor showing in this film.

Overall: The Departed is a great remake, perhaps one of the best remakes in the history of cinema. The original HK Infernal Affairs is an excellent movie, but this one just edges it out!

but for starters: make sure you also try the original asian version infernal affairs I (as part of a trilogy). i saw this asian version first: a really good good cop/bad cop movie, very convincing.
the american remake is also very good but if you know the original story, it stays a remake. nothing to be ashamed of because with this very strong cast and a class director qualitiy is assured. good entertainment. telling you about the plot would spoil it.

A brilliant cast where everyone gives a possible career best - especially Lenoardo Dicaprio and scene stealer Mark Wahlberg. A great script, filmed stylishly and fast-paced. And true what they say: Scorsese's best since Goodfellas.

I had always written off Dicaprio as a pretty-boy posing as an actor, but this film totally changed my perception and he's now rated as one of my top actors, an unbelievable performance in this film. Jack Nicholson is frightening, Ray Winstone is hard as nails and even Matt Damon (who I'm not usually too keen on) doesn't falter.

You stay on the edge of your seat from the very start to the very finish, great cat-and-mouse scenes with enough guns and violence to keep even the most demanding of mob film fans satisfied. This is maybe the coolest film since Reservoir Dogs. And some shocking scenes you don't see coming - especially the ending.

Absolutely superb, one of Scorsese's best, Dicaprio is phenomenal - one of those few films where everything is perfect: faultless.

A moving, real Chicago gangster film, with startling good high profile actors, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, (the fantastic) Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga, Ray Winstone,and Marc Walhberg, which set the film alight. Winner of the Oscar for Best Picture and director, both with where extremely deserved.

Directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio should be enough to make you buy this movie. Oh wait. Still not convinced? How about...
