I watch a lot of films. I enjoy the standard Hollywood blockbuster in any genre. I also occasionally enjoy a film that gives me something to think about and takes me places I didn't expect to go. Without a shadow of a doubt, Southland Tales is such a film. Its not only set in present day America, it intelligently, cunningly reflects American society, in all its glories and failings. My jaw literally fell open a couple of times. My eyes were wide taking it all in and I immediately watched the ending again - to take it in.
Most film characters and plots are one dimensional - popcorn movies, some enjoyable, most instantly forgettable. Southland Tales has not one single character like this, nor any plot line - there are layers to this film that stay with you long after the credits roll. It had me thinking for hours afterwards - telling friends about it days later and now writing a review (something I very, very rarely do). This is a definite must-have - buy, don't rent - you'll definitely want to watch again. Easily, my favourite film in (absolute) years.
I Loved It!!!

This is the newest film by Richard Kelly and probably my favourite one of his films. This is set in 2008, and yet it's a sort of futuristic, post World War 3 movie. It's a sort of sci-fi drama, with amazing characters, plot twists and overall quality. I've watched it about 10 times and I still don't think I'm anywhere near fully understanding it. I love it soo much!!! Everytime I watch it, I see something different, and think about things differently. I don't think two people would watch it and get the same thing from it. That's one of the things I love most about it, I oddly look forward to the time that I will watch it and it will just click. It is endlessly appealing and never boring. Watch it!!! Watch it with an open mind, trust me, you'll love it eventually, even if you don't like it at the start. My friend hated it the first time, I forced him to watch it again and now he loves it too. One of the most daring and ingenious films ever!!! Watch It!!! Love It!!!
Have an open mind

This is the most interesting film I will see this year. You need to have an open yet analytical mind when watching this as there is a lot of symbolism. It's a great movie for how YOU will interpret the story as everyone may have a different opinion. A little off the wall, yet smart and watchable.
Unwatchable.

I have watched many films over the years and lots of them have been weird or difficult to follow, I can cope with Brazil, Bug, City of the Lost children etc but Southland Tales is in a league of its own.
If you like films that are open to interpretation this may be for you but if you liked Donnie Darko and think this is going to be simular then avoid.
Even The Rock himself confessed in an interview that not even he knew what it was about and I doubt the director knows either.
Wat the hell!!!!

I am not quite sure what I was expecting from this film, and I watched it and now I am really confused. This film has a great cast and they all deliver their parts amazingly, but nobody seem to know how those parts fit together. This film is a real mess nobody seemed to know what was ment to happen or the point of the film was. Please avoid!!!!!
Underrated and unnecesarilly hated.

What a film, yes it's not for many people's tastes, but with a magnificent cast list, a great writer director and some awesome music, both original music by Moby and songs chosen from other sources.
Booed at Cannes, hated upon release, the film is most definitely cult, with a similar style as Magnolia, only much more imaginative and braver, in the way it's filmed and the ideas in it, it's basically a film about an alternate 2008 where everything is just a little more messed up, like Clinton being the Democratic candidate...
The cast are all brilliant and the writing, though a little cheesy and unsure, does it's job. The biggest issue is that this release is only 2 hours 10 minutes, we have 15 odd minutes of footage gone, not including credits, and the ending is more abrupt than i had hoped, but just the film alone is worth watching, but not for everyone.
Sorry Mr.Kelly but this is a mess

I like many others heard the awful reviews from "critics" and the fact it got booed at Cannes. So with this in mind i had low expectations. And to my disappointment I was right. There are lots of ideas at the beginning WW3 etc but towards the end, and it takes a while to get there, it feels as if Kelly had given up in a way and was just adding filler. But the cast due a fine job, Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson is pretty impressive to be fair and Gellar, Moore and Timberlake all do a pretty good job. However, in the end the film is a mess. Bits of it don't make sense at all (wink wink the JT scene with the Killers song) and towards the end you get the feeling that there seems to be no point to it, which when all said and done is a disappointment, My friend stated that Donnie Darko was a complete fluke with the evidence of this and by the end of this you may end up agreeing with him.
P.S. However, I urge rent it off a friend to say you've seen it because you never know it may be a classic in twenty or thirty years time.
Great Idea...poor delivery

I have heard a lot of bad reviews about this film. I was suprised to find that the key cast despite less than good reputations pulled off really good performances. Some of the concepts are really interesting and a lot of the comic moments are hilarious. The film is however is far too long and the narration throughout by Timberlake is absolutely pointless and takes from the film. Overall it reminds me of Kelly's director's cut of Donnie Darko, it's better to let the film explain itself rather than to spoonfeed the audience.
Trite

OK, I've read all three graphic novels, and they're not bad, credit for the effort. The film however, is a mess and may go down in history as the most unoriginal piece of film making ever made. And it isn't even that difficult to understand if you've even half a brain. Not so much pastiche as plagiarism. His use of neo-Marxism is insulting, rehashed ideas of Lynch bad form (Rebekkah del Rio, how could you) and any attempt at irony comes off amateurish at best. If you want postmodern, visit some classic Wong Kar Wai. It's a self-indulgent student film on a million dollar budget, another apocalyptic post-911 waste of money. Oh, and Kelly is not a genius lol.
