Io, Jupiter's innermost moon, hosts mining colony Con-Am 27, a high-tech hellhole. There Marshall William T. O'Niel (Sean Connery) probes some mysterious deaths among the miners. In pursuit of the truth, he's alone.

In Outland, writer/director Peter Hyams depicts a chilling extension of today's corporation-driven world. Dehumanisation is vividly evoked in the environments of production designer Phillip Harrison and special effects wizard John Stears, Academy Award winner for his work on Thunderball and Star Wars.

Outland runs like the forgotten cousin to Alien. The film owes much to Ridly Scotts all time classic. The sets are similar with every thing looking like it has a use, all the equipment has a grimey used look, and even Jerry Goldsmith does the music score that is almost identical to Alien. This is set in a near future where a mining complex on one of Jupiters moons has some unexplained suicides, as some of the work force freak out and decompress there space suits, giving way to gloriouse exploding heads. Sean Connery is the new Sherrif and is about to uncover a drugs running ring that the company is aware of. As the steroid like drugs, make the work force work alot better, it's just a shame of the side effects. To silence Connery the company bring in a hit squad to deal with him.
This is a great update on High Noon, and the space setting is a interesting twist. The music in the movie adds to the tension, and Connery is on top form, as the take no crap sherrif.
This is a well rounded muscular thriller, that deserves re-watching.

What happens when you dilute a great movie together with one hell of a great actor? You get Outland. No matter how many times I see this movie it just simply keeps me glued to the TV set. Must be one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.

Outland (1981) - ****
Sean Connery is on top form in this brilliantly chilling, tense sci-fi thriller co-starring Peter Boyle (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Steven Berkoff (Octopussy) set on Jupiter's moon. Surprisingly grisly and action packed, the film has a great sense of claustrophobia and excellent special effects from John Stears (Star Wars). I have to admit to only picking this up for the Connery appeal and was blown away by it's cleverness. A must-see.

outland! its high noon in outer space!

As i say in my title, outland is essentially a western in space, connery plays a law enforcement officer in a mining outpost, there is something sinister going on, he finds out too much and some professional hit men are on their way to kill him, the tension and foreboding build up as no one wants to help connerys character and time is running out, this really is an excellent sci fi thriller i would recommend to all.
