I think this is a great movie, first of all the casting of Johnny Depp and Al Pacino is fantastic, Johnny conveys his situation so well, when watching you can tell that underneath his exterior in front of the other mafia members he is crumbling inside. Whilst Pacino is grasping onto whatever dignity he has left within the mafia. By the end of the movie the watcher does sympathise with both characters as intended by Newell.
Its a fantastic movie into the ways in which the mafia work and how Joseph Pistone worked within the mafia, id recommend it to pretty much anyone.
I loved this film! Al Pacino character "Lefty" is brilliant, even though you know he's bad you just can't help but feel sorry for him. Johnny Depp pulls off another well acted part.
I think the thing that i liked the most is it wasn't really that gory - it just stuck to the story, trying to understand what made teh mob tick etc. "forget about it"
A great gangster film.
The greatest gangster flick since Goodfellows. Johnny Depp and Al Pacino at there very finest. A must see for all fans of the MOB!
Donnie Brasco may not sound like a great title for a film, it doesn't particulary give any hint about the plot of the film nor does it make you particulary interested in watching it!
However... Donnie Brasco is not to be missed. The performances from both Al Pacino and Johnny Depp are golden, Michael Madsen in his supporting role is also very good. The plot is engaging without the over the top violence seen in many gangster movies.
What I particulary liked about this film is the character of Lefty (Al Pacino) a down and out gangster, always having to do as his told. It's a nice change from seeing Pacino as the Michael Corlenoe type (The Godfather Trilogy) in fact he is the exact opposite, he isn't wealthy, he isn't a high profile mob leader, he is simply Lefty.
In conclusion Donnie Brasco is well worth seeing, giving an interesting look into mob life and showing it from 2 different sides, don't miss it!
This poses as a tough Gangster movie, in the shape of Goodfellas. Yet that's merely the outset, as beneath this layer lies an intense drama. Johnny Depp (in another great performance) plays an FBI agent sent to go undercover as a mobster, with Al Pacino being a member of this Mafia already. The task of doing his job and bring down the mob with evidence is challenged by Depp's friendship with Pacino, who shows a deeper side to the rogue stereotype of a gangster. Ranks highly in the Mafia genre, you won't 'forget about it!'
