I've been waiting for this one to come out for ages and it's clear why it's been so long coming as soon as you see it, the 16mm film used for all location shots was obviously appalling quality, and most of the studio scenes have some serious issues with interference lines down the left of the screen, plus there's even an annoying dot right centre screen for most the first episode too (surely could've removed that easily enough!?) but as ever there's been a reasonably good clean up job on the four episodes, and the CGI tastic re-do version is excellent! The CGI effect of the time machine in action and the location setting shot of the 'City Of The Future' are the only slightly overdone bits, but the rest really works well, especially the replacement of the Dalek voices and souped up final battle scene, and it all helps make the story gel and work a lot better than the clean episodes as originally shown, IMO, but it's great you can have it both ways!

The extras are great, loads to see, and it helps qualify the purchase regardless of the many insurmountable visual and aural issues inherent in the source material, and on the whole, well worth a look! Recommended!

  Torture Scene

I'm very impressed with the restored version. However, I'm old enough to have seen this story when it was first broadcast and unfortunately it is not the complete version it is promoted as. There was a scene where the Daleks were torturing the Doctor with the mind probe, to force him to admit who he is, which hasn't been restored. In the 70's the BBC would repeat certain Doctor Who stories as a complete edited together "film" (no episodes) and I suspect this scene was cut out to appease the likes of Mary Whitehouse when Day of the Daleks was re-broadcast. The scene may, of course, have been destroyed years ago. If you watch it again with this knowledge in place, I think you'll realise a feeling of something missing. Having said all this, my hat is off to the restoration team - a job superbly done!

The extras are worth it on there own

Watching the Day of the Daleks and the comments made by Nick Briggs only echoed what I thought when I watched this story on the original VHS release. What's wrong with the Dalek voices?. What is great about this is the second disc, the voices have been re-created by Nick Briggs and give them so much more power, than the weak original voices. Not only have the voices been re dubbed by the effects are all CGI and again appear to have added to the story. What is strange the editing appears to let a little bit of the the theme tune each time the cliffhanger is replayed at the beginning of episodes 2,3, and 4. The restoration team need a pat on the back for this one, my only Question is, did all the money go on this story allowing no money left to re-colourise Invasion of the Dinosaurs part 1, what a shame, this shows what is possible. The extras include the Unit story part 2, the making of the special edition, a clip from Blue peter, an amusing looking at the Unit dating problem(the time zone the stories are set in. All and all a great edition to the DVD range.

Best 3rd Doctor story - a must buy on DVD

One of my favourite Dr Who stories of all time I still have a treasured copy on Laser Disc (remember those?) the tale is well constructed moving between time zones at a time when the Doctor could not make use of the Tardis. Loved the Daleks using the old tunnels which added to the dark and grim atmosphere no end. If youre a fan of the 3rd Doctor (my FAV) you have to buy this. Fully recommended without hesitation.

DR WHO DAY OF THE DALEKS

| | See all CLAY65's reviews (6)

THE Doctor and Jo are transported to a terrifying alternate timeline where the Daleks have conquered the Earth. An interesting story as the human rebels, attempting to change the course of history inadvertantly cause the events which allow the Daleks to take over the Earth. A good fast paced story with plenty of action. The best supporting character has to be the human controller, played by Aubrey Woods. a traitor to the Human race, he aids The Doctor when he realizes that he can defeat the Daleks in the past and so avert the alternative timeline. With all new CGI this should be a real treat for fans of this particular adventure.

The Daleks are back to battle the 3rd doctor and UNIT

A good four parter in my opinion but you can tell that this wasn't written to star daleks and that it was heavily rewritten to star them after Barry and Terrance decided to put them in because we hadn't seen them for a while. The voices in the original were terrible so its nice to have new voices and more daleks rather than the 3 we had. A good romp with Jon Pertwee and a nice little battle at the end with UNIT, the daleks and the ogrons.

Very good and quite atmospheric in episode one, Hopefully, we will
get season two's pertwee story 'Mind of Evil' in some sort of coloured
version before too long, probably, the best of his era and starring the
late, great Roger Delgado as 'The Master.

Another good Doctor Who DVD to due to come out. I have been looking forward to this coming out for a while and reading that Nick Briggs who voice's The Daleks for the New Series is putting his voice to the Metal Monster's in this story, is like a dream come true.

The 3rd Doctor DVD's have been flying out this past year and this a going to be a great story to end the year on before Revisitations 3 comes out.

New cgi and Dalek voices- Really can't wait

| | See all Kaiser97's reviews (5)

Yes, we all know the voices and lack of Daleks in the final conflict let the story down, but now this is no longer the issue, as those fellows at 2entertain once again save the day with some cracking new effects.

This a good Dalek story, sadly once let down by the poor portrayal of the Daleks, but this regular criticism will be shot out of the water. Since this is their first appearance in the series since 1967, this story feels even more special, brought about due to popular public demand at the time and popularised by Blue Peter. I look forward to this with gusto
