  Awful

Look I only paid 1.49 for this dvd so should not complain, and the seller sent it promptly....however it is definitely the worst western I have ever bought. I thought because John Wayne did a fantastic version this could not be bad.....but what with Jeff Bridges talking in the most ridiculously put on accent all the time, and other reasons, it was absolutely too awful to watch more than 15 mins of it.

Hailee Steinfeld is a stand out.

The movie moved along at an even pace but nothing much really seemed to happen and it was odd how it makes out josh brolin is one of the main stars in the movie even though he's only in for about five minutes but overall, it was well acted, especially Hailee Steinfeld who gave a great performance.

  Does the original justice

The Coen brothers were wise to call this film a re-interpretation of the book rather than a re-make of the film. It brings a timeless classic forward to the 21st century and has a fantastic cast. 9/10

  An Assured Modern Western

I have not seen the John Wayne 60's original so am unable to make any comparisons but judged purely on its own merits the Cohen brothers have certainly created a competent modern western. The simple story involves 14-year old girl Mattie Ross enlisting the aid of an experienced bounty hunter in order to track down the man who murdered her father.

The movie moves along at a good pace and features everything you would expect from the genre, including some brutal shoot outs. Jeff Bridges, taking on the role originally played by John Wayne, and Matt Damon are as watchable as ever but it is really Hailee Steinfeld in her first major movie role who steals the show as Mattie Ross, showing a level of maturity beyond her years and helping to hold the whole movie together. Fans of the genre won't be disappointed.

  Big let down.

It is very difficult not to compare a remake with the original.I can easily say that this was not nearly as good as the original.Jeff Bridges mumbles through the lot.Seeing as he is the main character it is terrible over acting. It spoils the whole film. The other characters especially the young girl are very good. There is only one John Wayne!

Not as good as I was hoping for

I missed this at the cinema and was really looking forward to seeing it on DVD.
I agree with some of the other reviews in that I found the film quite slow, but I didn't find it boring.
The cast is excellent and gel superbly...although I too found it difficult at times to understand what on earth Bridges was saying.
That aside the acting is great, the cinematography is superb and the whole thing (including the gun fights) feels so realistic.
My only real complaint is that I found the ending quite weak...one of those endings where things are sort of dismissed with a short scene and no real impact ending?
Overall a good watch. Not brilliant but not bad either.

  Something of a let down

This was a movie I was really looking forward to, sadly it fell some way short of the hype. Sure, the performance by Hailee Steinfeld is superb but she is the one and only bright light in this dull movie. Jeff Bridges mumbles and slurs his way through the movie as a poor Rooster and Matt Damon (who I highly rate) looks as bored and uninspired as I was watching it. The cinematography and score work well but when 2 of the 3 main characters are so weak its difficult to pull the movie much above mediocre. Not the worst movie I have seen and some will like it but if you ask me it was a massive missed opportunity.

Not As Classic as the Original but Still A Good Film.. True

*This is the Coen Brothers remake of the Classic Western where a young lady sets out to avenge her Fathers death. Like other Coen Brothers films it has the usual quirky characters & dialogue, erie settings and that slightly surreal / vague feel that you can really lose yourself in!
*Some of the Fans of the original may be a little bemused at times. This version will bring this Genre to a younger audience not as used to Westerns. Overall maybe not as classic as the original but still a good remake & an entertaining film.

  Best western since unforgiven.

I've never really enjoyed the Coen Brothers films until I bought this brilliant DVD. It starts off as a good western and turns bonkers with slapstick comedy and bizzare characters. Funny and entertaining.
