From writer, executive producer and series showrunner, Veena Sud (Cold Case), The Killing is based on the wildly successful Danish television series Forbrydelsen and tells the story of the murder of a young girl in Seattle and the subsequent police investigation.

The Killing ties together three distinct stories around a single murder including the detectives assigned to the case, the victim's grieving family, and the suspects.

Set in Seattle, the story also explores local politics as it follows politicians connected to the case. As the series unfolds, it becomes clear that there are no accidents; everyone has a secret, and while the characters think they've moved on, their past isn't done with them.

A Promising Start but Drags Everything Out for too Long

I have yet to watch the well received Danish original (it is on my 'to do list' with a number of other shows) but seeing the US version advertised on TV decided to give it a try and was initially quite impressed. The major cast members were all very good and not having the usual case per episode formula seen on countless cop procedurals made a pleasant change.

Of course I am unable to make any comparisons to the Danish version but purely judged on its own merits I found that, despite a well written and intriguing opening episode, everything moved along at far too slow a pace. I have no problem with slow-burning drama, The Wire and Mad Men rank amongst my favourite shows, but The Killing provides too many obvious red herrings that the protagonists waste their and the audiences time on. Worst of all after sticking with the show for thirteen episodes we were still left guessing as to who killed Rosie Larsen until season two is available!

While the first season of The Killing certainly had plenty of things going for it I can't help but feel it would have benefited from a shorter, tighter season in order to better keep audience's attention.

Didn't see the original, but this is an outstanding series, beautifully filmed, amazing acting and a bucketful of red herrings! One minor quibble - I didn't know there was a 2nd series planned so I expected it to be wrapped up in the final episode, only to be hit with a major twist. Not sure if S2 can live up to it.

Don't bother with this, compared to the Danish version it's absolute rubbish. In every way the characters and story line are far superior in the original.Unfortunately I watched the US version first;don't waste your time, learn another language, the guitar, paint the front room instead.
