Rowan Atkinson runs the show in this feature length adventure for his own creation Mr.Bean. After barely maintaining his job at the national art gallery Bean is sent by his employers to the unveiling of Whistler's mother in LA. The art gallery are simply sending him so to be rid of his presence for a few weeks but those recieving him in America are under the allusion they have been sent a genius......until they meet him that is.
The film is a little different in style than the characters T.V material but that really isn't a bad thing. Director Mel Smith makes the humour more acceptable for all age groups and by having his character do a little more talking than usual Atkinson makes him more tolerable to the masses.
THe script is a wonderful one, right down from its premise to the gags themselves comedy movies are rarely better. A wider group of supporting charcters with a little more in the way of character might have been worthwhile but its hard to complain when Atkinson clearly dominates the screen no matter who he shares is with.
The Film runs for the reasonably trim running time of 85 minutes which helps keep the film trundling along without to many stops are dull patches. There is one side story with a police officer that does the film no real favours but in saying that there are still more than enough good little subplots to compensate. It's a wonderful comedy film and one that the family should all enjoy as a whole, rather than just a select demographic. All in all this is great fun and certainly one of the best comedies of the late 90's.
The DVD has a theatrical trailer but nothing else in terms of bonus material.
