After stumbling upon a portal to the past in the ruins of an old Yorkshire farmhouse, Tom, a troubled schoolboy, is whisked back to the time of the Second World War. With a loveable sheep dog named Tess as his only guide, he meets Sam Wheeler, a kindly farmer (Tom Wilkinson) and May, an orphaned evacuee about his own age. Learning to cope with the dangers and difficulties of life in this time helps Tom come to terms with his own family problems.

Back in the present, he discovers something terrible has happened to his friends just a few days after his visit, and he is desperate to get back to the past to save them... even if doing so has consequences he could never dream of.

This is a beautiful family film, but it is a bit sad. My 9 yr old enjoyed it but my 7 yr old found it quite sad.

Two children, the same town but different times. May in the 2nd world war and Tom present day.
Tom is able to travel back in time at the old farmhouse ruins with the help of a mysterious sheep dog. When he realises the farmhouse is going to be hit by a bomb he desperately tries to get back in time to warn his friends....
This is a very special film with an unusual twist at the end.

I would rate this as similar to the Water horse, Legend of the Deep, Princess Stallion, Fairy tale a true story, Secret Garden and the likes.

Great acting and an original story line. Well worth watching time and again with all the family.

 A lovely involving film

I waited a long time for this film & it was worth the wait. The two children are wonderfully played and you are completely involved in the story. There are strong resonances with Johnny and the Bomb, but it's its own story and feels very believable. A very enjoyable way to spend an hour and a half.
