Hugely underrated, this is a fantastic mixture of sci-fi, fantasy and crime thriller. In my opinion, the less you know about the plot before seeing the film, the better (all i would say is that the film starts with a man waking up in a hotel room with no memories and no idea of who he is). The film is complex and imaginative with a brilliant cast, superb special effects and truly amazing production design
(other reviewers who have mentioned 'The Matrix' should note that sets from the film including rooftops and buildings were re-used in that film). The only flaw in the film is the opening narration by Kiefer Sutherland, which gives away several plot twists. Director Alex Proyas was forced by the film studio, New Line Cinema to include it (if you are watching the film for the first time, you are advised to keep the sound off until Kiefer Sutherland looks at his pocket watch). Hopefully Alex Proyas will one day release his original cut of the film without the narration.
This DVD, from Entertainment in Video, is a disappointment. The only extras are the trailer and a 'Making of' featurette, which is only 5 minutes long. Neither of these is subtitled, though the film is. The Region 1 DVD has far more extras (including 2 audio commentaries). The definitive DVD of this film for me will include Alex Proyas cut of the film plus plenty of extras.

Alex Proyas' follow-up to 'The Crow' is an underrated sci-fi gem.

Great visuals and a cracking cast. Hurt knocks it out the park with ease. Connelly is great too.

Customer rating: 4 out of 5 stars Stylish sc-fi

Both films Matrix and dark city have allot of similarities if you look closely but also have there unique story of there own. Dark city came out a year before the Matrix so if any film got its influence from one another it was The Matrix. Dark city is a very dark and stylish sc-fi film. It hasn't got allot of action but its defiantly worth watching and great visuals.

Customer rating: 5 out of 5 stars No DARK CITY, no MATRIX

This film is an artistic masterpiece and the above 1 star review is completely unfair.
It has a wonderfully dark atmosphere and great premise and the acting is superb with great voices especially for the enemies who have very fitting raspy voices.

Thos film was also considered as a inspiration for the original Matrix so if you enjoyed the Matrix at all you would enjoy this too.

Also see Terry Gilliam's Brazil which is somewhat similar.

Customer rating: 1 out of 5 stars Unoriginal.

This film, although mildly entertaining, is quite frankly rubbish. It takes so many references from other films that I wouldn't be surprised if any of the ideas in the film were original. I imagine a sci-fi fan would like it though.
