I have to admit I am a fan of Jim Carrey, not least beause he throws almost nuclear levels of energy and enthusiasm into his roles and this film is no exception. The premise of the film is decent enough - Pet Detective fluffs the rescue of a stranded animal, retires to the tranquillity of a Buddhist temple, keen to leave the past behind him etc. Jim Carrey makes the role of Ace Ventura is own, smacking audiences square in the chops with his wacky physical comedy and irritating yet alarmingly catchy personal mannerisms and quirky little quips. I thought this film was slightly muted overall in comparison to the frankly outstandingly stupid but bloody good fun 'Pet Detective', but director Steve Oedekerk keeps the feel and the flair from the first film going strong. I liked the almost sycophantic but ever-so-weary Fulton Greenwald (Ian McNeice), his strong but somewhat contradictory performance softens the manically jagged edges of his unlikely partner. The set pieces are excellent, totally ridiculous, but that is exactly what gives the film its charm. A fine effort.
