In this second installment Ace Ventura is in emotional breakdown after failing to save a raccoon in the Himalayas. He is approached by Fulton Greenwall, an African missionary working for a provincial consulate. Being that Ace's influence is disruptive to the monastery, the Grand Abbot eagerly gives Ace excuses by which to justify his departure.Just as funny as the first film laughs are guaranteed and so is the humour and jokes.

I have to admit I am a fan of Jim Carrey, not least beause he throws almost nuclear levels of energy and enthusiasm into his roles and this film is no exception. The premise of the film is decent enough - Pet Detective fluffs the rescue of a stranded animal, retires to the tranquillity of a Buddhist temple, keen to leave the past behind him etc. Jim Carrey makes the role of Ace Ventura is own, smacking audiences square in the chops with his wacky physical comedy and irritating yet alarmingly catchy personal mannerisms and quirky little quips. I thought this film was slightly muted overall in comparison to the frankly outstandingly stupid but bloody good fun 'Pet Detective', but director Steve Oedekerk keeps the feel and the flair from the first film going strong. I liked the almost sycophantic but ever-so-weary Fulton Greenwald (Ian McNeice), his strong but somewhat contradictory performance softens the manically jagged edges of his unlikely partner. Simon Callow as ever hams it up as the pompous twit behind the disappearance of the elusive 'Great White Bat,' and Sophie Okenedo is underused as the not-for-much-longer virginal African princess. The set pieces are excellent, totally ridiculous, but that is exactly what gives the film its charm. A fine effort.

This sequel to the 1994 comedy Ace Ventura Pet detective sends Carrey's energetic lead character to Africa to search for a native tribe's lost bat.
Director and writers have changed for this entry in the saga with Steve Oedekerk taking up taking up both tasks. That said niether jobs are performed as well this time round, but they are satisfactory enough to lay the groundwork for a decent comedy.
Thanks largely to another fine comedic performance from Carrey a decent comedy this is, and whilst the gag rate isn't as high or indeed the jokes themselves as damned funny, this remains worthy of the 90 minutes required to watch it.
Again though like the original this DVD is totally vanilla in terms of extra features.
