This is dark stuff, built around a concept that's kept philosophers thinking down through the ages and which, incidentally, can never be disproved. You'll have to keep your wits about you if you don't want to lose the plot as the action switches back and forth between the computer generated matrix and the real(?) world. For this reason alone, one viewing isn't enough. If you've just come back from the pub I would recommend something easier on the brain cells!

Absolutely amazing sci-fi film that will please all fans of the genre, SPECTACULAR effects, some of the best ever, a fascinating, masterful story. This classic is clearly unmissable. So it's up to you, red pill or blue pill.

Brilliant movie, even if you don't understand it in parts, the effects just make the whole thing worthwile, the slow mo and bullet time effects have still not been used in a better way 10 years later. Keanue was perfectly cast. Sadly it was all down hill for the series after this, after it seemed to get a bit too clever for itself. Shame

Thrilling storyline, interesting characters and intense action scenes! The matrix is so good that when I upgrade to HD this will be sold and I will get this on BluRay disc! The DVD quality is the usual 10/10 for DVD quality. Decent amount of features considering theres only one disk and the film is quite long too although it doesn't ever linger and you are on the edge of your seat for the full 2 hours! This is the origin of the famously repeated constantly 'bullet time' where time slows down so you can see bullets moving. Also, the leanback matrix dodge is in this one.
This should not only be in any sci fi or action film lovers collection but the lover of any great film should have this. It says rated 15 but it would be 12a in todays standards (12a wasn't invented when this came out).

This is what Sci-fi is all about , cracking story line , excellent action and state of the art special effects which aren't over used.
Not a huge fan of the limited acting skills of Keanu Reeves but he does play this one spot on and its hard to think of anyone else playing the role other than him as he has made the Neo character almost iconic...try thinking of someone else playing the Terminator instead of Arnold or John McClane instead of Willis...you get the point !

although my wife says i'm crazy because i see this movie 'almost every month' (she likes to exaggerate of course), i think i'm not.
i just like it, visually this movie is perfect and the story poses a question that is a very appalling one: what if....? the actionscenes are truly amazing and..... let's say i simply like it.
and the same thing can be said of part II en III, you have my word.
(and yes, my wife would tell you something completely different)

The matric really is a revolutionary film for its time, also the first film is definately my favourite. The acting, action and coreography are all 10/10 and it will introduce you to a storyline unlike anything youve experienced before. Its well worth a watch and there is a lot of hot action scenes in it too, but perhaps not for the light-hearted...

this film is amazing,but will take some time for you to get your head round it, i have recently watched it again, after i watched five years ago and was left baffled at the end of it. but this time i understood it and was stunned by the content. one question - Blue or Red?

Arrived today. Have it on DVD at last. This is one of the best films ever made, definitely in the top 20 of all time. I highly recommend it with no shadow of doubt. Amazing story, amazing effects. Ultimate in film viewing pleasure!

No action movie has ever surpassed this film. Truly brilliant.
