'Taxi Driver' provoked fierce controversy when it was released, running into censorship problems in America as some of the scenes of violence were described to be 'as gory as Clockwork Orange and Straw Dogs' (Evening News '76). In addition there was outcry at a 13-year-old schoolgirl actress (Jodie Foster) co-starring as a prostitute.

It won Best Picture at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival and received Academy Award nominations for Best Film, Best Actor (Robert De Niro) and Best Supporting Actress (Jodie Foster). Considered to be one of the most powerful films in motion picture history, 'Taxi Driver' is a film which is '...a savage piece of work - and hellishly brilliant' (Evening News '76).

Taxi Driver is a classic movie, but not always an easy watch.
The film delves into the mind of a psychotic loner, who sees himself as a saviour.
It beautifully portrays how someone could end up being this way and how they can justify it.
You do feel a genuine empathy towards him by the end.
The story moves along at a balanced pace with the tension always brewing, leading to a violent climax
De Niro is in almost every scene and he is on Electrifying form in one of his Legendary Perfomances.
Harvey Kietel and Cybil Sheppard give good support, Martin Scorsese makes a terrifying cameo.
And Jodie Foster is Astonishing in a controversial role.
Uncompromising, Unflinching, Unmissable.

DE NIRO OUTSTANDING!!! ONE OF THE BEST FILMS EVER!!

where do i start, this film is one of the most bold well acted, not just by robert de niro but jodie foster too who plays a thirteen year old prostitute. de niro is my favourite actor and it is his best performance along with raging bull. you should see this movie before you die i admit it is kinda slow in some parts but thats the beauty of it. martin scorsese is a genius, and does a bit of acting in this film too and to my suprise was exellect even though it was a very small scence. it just shows how well scorcese and de niro worked together and what a great partnership they had!! conclusion. BUY THIS FILM!!!

This , I realise is going to be an unpopular review seeing that everyone else has rated thisa 5 stars. I do love classic old and cult movies. Some of my favs are films such as Spartacus, The Great Escape and the 70's cult The Warriors. Therefore I thought that given this is a Martin Scorcese movie with the greatest actor ever in it, that I was sure to enjoy this classic..... I didn't
The film dragged on for nearly 2 hours with very little happening in it. A rather annoying Saxaphone track seem to be playing throughout the movie which would have been better placed in a porn movie and after about 10 minutes, I was already losing interest.
Yes, I got the fact that here was an Insomniac working the night shift in the sleazier parts of New York and yes,I got the fact that this guy was dispairing more and more about the scum on the streets, however, I felt the film left so many questions and the build up was way to inconsistant for my liking. The presidential candidate, what was that for? Cybil Shepherd, what was she about? It was almost like there should have been a commentry running alongside!
To summarise, and in my opinion only, Untidy, boring , badly directed, terrible soundtrack and overall I wished I'd never bothered.
Just wondering if the film would be so well received by others if you had identical end product but with an unknown director and leading man, yet an equal performance.

im the same i didnt find it good

i understand that this guy has serious problems about how he viewed the scum on the streets and in gradually progressed into him killing ( 4 in total) i like classics such as seven but this was just dull and boring the acting was amazing as always from Robert D but im sorry i am not with the majority of people on this movie , i think if this was not made into a classic will people still be giving it 5 stars ??

 Absolute classic

Film making at its best. Ignore 'Greenwhateverhescalled', he simply doesnt 'get it'. Better stick to your Hollywood CGI mate.
If you can appreciate filmaking as an artform rather than just a way of killing a couple of hours and you havnt seen this film.........then buy it. And also dont forget to drop Mean Streets in your basket aswell.
