Hollywood 1927. George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) is a silent movie superstar. The advent of the talkies will sound the death knell for his career and see him fall into oblivion. For young extra Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), it seems the sky's the limit major movie stardom awaits. The Artist tells the story of their interlinked destinies.

A beautiful, amazing, moving, original film

What a superb film! I can't give it less than 5 stars because I came out of the cinema on a huge high, feeling completely satisfied with every part of it. It's a breath of fresh air that exceeded my expectations. Everything about it oozes quality, from the two charismatic lead actors who have great chemistry together, that cute little dog, the moody lighting that you can only really get with black & white film, the powerful score and clever occasional use of sounds (paradoxically), a very intelligent script that manages to homage (and respect) a past era while not underestimating the modern viewer, and gorgeous black and white cinematography.

I was amazed by how moving and also how funny a silent film can be. If you're a fan of, or have a passing interest in, the history of film, give this a go. It's fictional but based on events that might have happened in cinema back in the late 1920s and early 1930s. There's also plenty of references to other films in there for the film buff to appreciate, and another nice touch is the subtle use of story-related symbolism in the film titles you see on the cinema hoardings.

Now that 3D has failed (again), this film is evidence that there are still ways for cinema to try new things to make films that are different and innovative. It's also evidence that, surprisingly, silent films still work as a storytelling medium! The director deserves a medal for doing this good a job on a film so unusual. If it doesn't win a shed load of awards I'll be surprised.

Excellent - something different with style, music and humour

I did not wish to see this film but my wife insisted - and I am glad that she did. A silent movie - me - NO, but I was wrong. Such a delighful
film that is easy to watch, carrying you from one scene to another whilst understanding exactly what is happening. A great story, wonderful dancing, a cast that captures the whole experience and brings you along with it. Visual humour that leaves you laughing, a cute dog who almost captures the film AND you will leave the cinema remembering continually the fantastic music. Overall a great experience. A film not to be missed by the film lover.

Not good at all just american-like..

This movie is really bad and I know Jean Dujardin as I'm Belgian.. This is his worst movie and nobody cared about it before the Americans noticed this movie...
Do not waste your time and have your OWN opinion!

 The dog steals the show

I was unsure about the Artist at first. I liked the idea of watching a silent film but having grown up in an era of surround sound, massive explosions and ever increasing decibel levels in movies I wasn't actually sure if I'd like it.
After deciding to finally give it a go, i'm glad I did. The film is nothing short of amazing. The story is great, the performances are well acted and the picture quality is top notch.
Of all the performances though it is the dog that steals the show.
Well worth a look and a good film to add to your collection.

 FLAWLESS!

Believe the hype. Utterly lifechanging in its scope and intelligence. Film of the year? Case closed. I adored it,
