Based on the classic ghost story, The Woman In Black tells the tale of Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a lawyer who is forced to leave his young son and travel to a remote village to attend to the affairs of the recently deceased owner of Eel Marsh House.

Working alone in the old mansion, Kipps begins to uncover the town's tragic and tortured secrets and his fears escalate when he discovers that local children have been disappearing under mysterious circumstances. When those closest to him become threatened by the vengeful woman in black, Kipps must find a way to break the cycle of terror.

I was very much looking forward to this, Radcliff grows up and leaves Potter Directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake) and released on the relaunched Hammer label. The film is brilliantly gothic and moody, dark shadows, rolling mist, haunted houses, and a village that hides a secret. The film drip feeds the dread from the moment it starts as Radcliff takes a trip to the North East to sort out the deeds of a estate and things start to go bump in the night. Radcliff is excellent as although still looking like a thirteen year old he convinces in his guilt stricken performance. The sets are brilliantly spooky and as the spooks starts it does send an odd shiver up the spine, but nothing more than that. As the mystery of the child deaths in the village unfold the visits from the woman in black become more intense but the film has to revert to jump scares to get a cheap reaction where the first half of the film played it better by letting the viewer use the imagination, but I have to say the final moments of the film is unexpected and gives the film a great emotional punch.
The Woman In Black is a good movie, but I did expect something a bit more un-nerving.

Brilliant film ! Spooky gothic dark scary ghost story straight from the Hammer Horror label! not really frightening IMO but plenty of jumpy scary moments ! great performances all round paticully from the lead Daniel Radcliffe as the young solicitor investigating the affairs of Eel Marsh House !..loved the unhinged mrs Daily brillaintly played by Janet Mcteer and the house itself is so spooky straight out of a Hammer House Horror ! The Woman In Black herself is played by the talented Liz White but its a pity she doesnt have a bigger acting part in this ! cant wait for the DVD release and some more uncut scenes ! highly recomended !

I found the Woman in Black a genuinely creepy and scary movie, it was chilling yet gripping - with a few jumps. I think the gothic theme of the story makes it a lot more scary and gripping. Also the ghosts in the gothic theme was brilliant. There were a few frights in the cinema, not for the faint hearted, see, I would recommend a watch for horror fans, especially gothic horror fans.
